Jerusalem

Written by William Blake

And did those feet in ancient time
Walk upon England’s mountains green
And was the holy lamb of God
On England’s pleasant pastures seen

And did the countenance divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills
And was Jerusalem builded there
Among those dark Satanic mills

Bring me my bow (my bow) of burning gold
Bring me my arrows of desire
Bring me my spears o’clouds unfold
Bring me my chariot of fire

I will not cease from mental fight
Nor shall my (my) sword sleep in hand
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England’s green and pleasant land
'Til we have built Jerusalem
In England’s green and pleasant land

England

Greetings and God Save the Qeeen

beautiful, “Jerusalem” is the hymn they are singing at the beginning and end of Chariots of Fire at the memorial church service, you see where the movie got its name. too bad England is actively trying to jettison its Christian heritage, along with the rest of Europe. Maybe they will wake up, as we did, to the fact that we are indeed at war.

errr… excuse me? England isn’t just one little country, it is also inhabited ( indiginous that is) by Scots, Welsh, Irish, Manx, Channel Islanders, Cornish, East Anglians and even (though thankfully not to many) Geordies. (We never talk about Liverpudlians). Never did sing Jeruselem at school either. As for religion, I think you will find that if you look carefully Catholicism is stronger per head of poulation in Europe and particularly in the UK than it is in the States.
I would also suggest you look at the foundation of your “Christian Heritage”, it both came from Europe and is based on Charity. Can’t see much of that in a war.

Walstan, is “England” the proper term for an entity which includes the Scots, Welsh and Irish (Northern Ire)? Wouldn’t that be the United Kingdom? Great Britain, as I understand it would be England, Scotland and Wales.

Did I misunderstnad your post?

Jerusalem is used by the Townswoman’s Guild (very English) as their anthem. They reputedly sing it at their meetings, but as they have never invited me to one I can say first hand.

As for Liverpudlians I’m only a honorary one as I was born in Stockport in the days when it was in a proper county (Cheshire) not absorbed by some metropolitan conglomeration.

Yes, England is just one bit of the UK which stands for the United Kingdoms of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Britain is a very flexible term. So if England gets knocked out of the World Cup (football- soccer - very English this thread) and Scotland is still in, then suddenly news (at least in England) switches from England being in the world cup to Britain being in the World Cup!
Also British Isles seems at times to include the whole of Ireland. When asked for Nationality I always say English and only give UK if I’m asked for citizenship.:bounce:

Dear Franze

Thank you for posting this. I know Spain is no stranger to terrorist attacks such as the attack in Madrid. I’m remembering your countrymen who lost their lives or were injured as a result of terrorism as well as those of my own country.

God Bless you Franze

Thank Theresa, my country reactionate very bad to these bombings and throw the deaths to the goverment, we lived in a pre-civil war that days and Zapatero won sadly. I am happy for England because the reaction has been envoyable, awesome reaction. This is my tribute to the british people.

thank you Franze as well from me - Jerusalem is one of my favourites (alongside Faith of Our Fathers!)

I am English but my father is Spanish. He feels exactly the same way as you. He lives in this country now but is saddened by what has happened in his home country.
