I’ve read portions of the Poem years ago and while I know people who were deeply moved by the books, particularly the Passion account, there were two things about them that bothered me (just an ordinary Catholic laywoman btw).
  • The middle portions were, in all honesty, rather dull. (I do most of my reading before bed and there were chapters that could put me to sleep, really, in seconds.) It was very easy for me to lose the thread of the story.
*Most disturbing was the account of Our Lady’s birth. There is a description of someone (I believe Joachim) holding her and unswaddling her, followed by a description of her private parts. Sure it’s describing a baby but… Really? Was that necessary?

Just my two cents…

I’ve only read parts of two volumes, so I guess I missed that, oh my gosh, I can’t believe that about Our Lady’s birth. That’s terrible. Thanks for that info.

It is with much sadness that I see so much unbelief expressed in this thread!

In answer to the person who originally started this thread: Go straight to the source: If you ask Jesus from the Heart what He wants you to beleive in regard to the Poem of the Man-God. He is faithful and WILL answer you. Open your heart, SEEK & WATCH for His answer. If you ask through the intercession of His Mother, much grace will be experienced.
This parallels exactly the Mormon defense to the Book of Mormon. “Just read it and see if you have a burning in your bosom.”

Feelings are a dangerous source of doctrine.

It would seem that you have already answered your own question…

You heard academic arguments and on the other hand you have personally witnessed the fruits that this book brought in the lives of people around you. Academic arguments were given to Judas Escariot by the Scribes and Pharisees of his time in order to confuse him and push him to betray Jesus ; he ended up beleiving that deicide was his duty to the nation and to the Temple… That is the living hell where academic arguments pulled him down into ; if you are a theologian and you know what you are doing, then go ahead and try to sort things out intellectualy otherwise leave the art of theological joust to the theologians and just follow the advice of the Master who made it very clear: By their fruits you shall know… And when it comes to the Poem of the Man God and the Divine Mercy messages which were both placed on the index (by Saint Pope John the 23rd no less), the fruits turned out to be very good ; you testified of the goodness of the fruits in your question and so did Pope Pius XIII and so did Bishop Danylak when providing his “imprimatur” in 2002, Bishop Danylak wrote: “Is there anything against faith or morals in her writings? All her critics begrudgingly have acknowledged that there is nothing against faith and morals… there is nothing objectionable in The Poem of the Man-God and all the other writings of Valtorta.” and I least of all can confirm your testimony myself ; the bottome line is this: there is nothing to fear in reading the Poem of the Man God. My personal advice to you: Just ignore the static and start reading. God Bless !
