Krakow, Poland, Jun 9, 2017 / 11:18 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The pastoral care of families was one of the key areas of discussion for Poland’s bishops in their latest plenary assembly, which focused on continuity between the teaching of St. John Paul II and Pope Francis.
“The bishops understand that the Church thinks in a linear way; it’s not a change of teaching, but it is in one line,” Fr. Pawel Rytel-Andrianik, spokesman for the Polish bishops’ conference, told CNA June 9.
“In Familiaris consortio and Amoris laetitia you have one line in terms of teaching on the family,” he said, noting that a large chuck of the first day of their June 6-7 plenary focused on the progress of guidelines for the application of Amoris laetitia regarding the pastoral care of families in general, as well as couples in irregular unions.

yes, that’s the proper way to interpret new encyclicals. there is nothing in AL that really contradicts anyways. just a couple vague statement that people have twisted and taken out of context, it’s totally blown out of proportion
I mean no offence, but I’m not certain “blown out of proportion” is really the right phrase to use given the seriousness of the different interpretations that have been drawn from this encyclical.

Some have taken Amoris Laetitia to be a break with the Church’s moral teaching tradition and the scriptural basis on which it was based, and now say that voluntary, repeated sex outside of marriage is not always a mortally sinful way of life (E.g. Germany, Malta, Buenos Aires).

Others, such as the Polish Bishops, Anglican Ordinariate, certain US and UK Dioceses, have stated that Amoris Laetitia can only be interpreted in the light of the commandments of Christ and 2,000 years of moral and pastoral teachings that sex outside of marriage is a mortal sin. That is what the Polish Bishops mean, that Amoris Laetitia has not changed the Church’s teachings on the immorality of sex outside of marriage. But of course Familiaris Consortio (paragraph 84 is the most relevant part to this discussion) was written by Pope St John Paul II. So it’s no surprise that they would adopt this position.

So in some parishes to have sex outside of marriage, with full knowledge and consent, is now no longer a big deal if you justifying reasons, in others it is a mortal sin which requires repentance and absolution in the Sacrament of Confession in order to be able to receive Holy Communion. Regardless of which side of the debate one finds themselves, stating that there appears on the face of things to be a contradiction in the application of AL is not “blown out of proportion”.

Fr. Rytel-Andrianik said “the bishops appreciate, very much, Amoris laetitia,” and see it as “a treasure of the Church that builds on Familiaris consortio.”

“…it is in one line,”

“…in a linear way;”

“…builds on Familiaris consortio.”

This indicates a change of some kind. Not a change of Church teaching, but a change in a pastoral practice, or a change in the way the teaching is applied.

They say nothing which could be construed as suggesting they support Holy Communion for the civilly divorced and remarried who refuse to abstain from sex (per Familiaris Consortio paragraph 84, and consistent with the church’s teaching before then), whether one would choose to consider that a change of teaching, practice or application.
