WARSAW, Poland (AP) – A Polish priest who lost his job at the Vatican earlier this month after revealing that he is gay and has a boyfriend was indefinitely suspended Wednesday by the church in Poland from performing the functions of a priest.
Rev. Krzysztof Charamsa, 43, came out as gay and criticized the Vatican for its approach to homosexuality on the eve of a major meeting of world bishops in Rome. The Vatican immediately fired him from his job with the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith and his local bishop in Poland, which is predominantly Roman Catholic, called on him to return to proper priestly behavior.
On Wednesday, Charamsa’s home diocese of Pelplin, based in Gdansk, said he hadn’t shown any signs of improvement and has been suspended as a priest and can no longer wear priestly vestments. It said in a statement that the punishment can be reversed if Charamsa returns to the “true teaching of the church and Christ’s priesthood.”

He hasn’t “shown any signs of ‘improvement’”??
That’s an odd way of putting it.
Do they have him put away somewhere as if he’s sick and they are waiting for him to get “better”?

As I recall, Charamsa did say he was leaving the priesthood when he made his other blockbuster announcement.

I beleive it is more administrative to make sure that the faithful know that he is suspended. Unfortunately many clergy that have been suspended continue to offer the sacraments which can confuse unsuspecting members of the Church. By removing his faculties it also means that he cannot validly offer absolution or witness marriages. The faithful need to be aware of that incase he sets up a “Catholic” church.

As for signs of improvement they are simply saying he hasn’t been obedient to his bishop. All diocesan clergy promise obedience to their bishop. Those who willfully disobey can be suspended or can be dismissed from the clerical state.

this was an article in Polish. Sometimes things get poorly translated.

Similar to a quarantine, I would hope the bishop would keep him away from the rest of the flock so that his sickness and sin does not infect them as well.

Translation difficulties aside…

Yes, improvement. Maybe progress? Conversion? Signs of repentance and desire to follow Church teaching?

Shouldn’t a human being progress in virtue? Move forward toward sanctity? Have a desire and comittment to do these things?

It is a symptom of a sick culture when the highest value is “meh, whatever you wanna do, that’s fine”. We expect so little of ourselves and others. Malaise. Acedia.

Perverse and absolute tolerance is not a virtue, it is a disease that leads to nowhere.

I don’t think this is a matter of quarantine. It is a matter of a priest going against his promise of celibacy. It really doesn’t have to do with the fact he is homosexual.

Yes…I’m all for a person making progress, moving toward virtue, etc. But the priest’s idea of progress is not the same as the church’s–which is why he should not be a Catholic priest anymore.
Fair enough.
I don’t think the priest, or people who supports his decision and his choices, are thinking this way at all.
You may not think this way, but the culture at large expects the Church to have absolute tolerance for “meh, whatever”. (This is also know in Christianity as “sloth”, a deadly condition for any person. In sloth a person refuses to have a realistic sense of one’s spiritual state in relation to God, and is unable to muster the conviction to move forward. A person is crushed by, and capitulates to, the effort required to see one’s self realistically, and then advance in holiness. Spiritual death.)

The established culture believes the Church is committing a sin by expecting us to advance in holiness against our disordered desires. We have a perverse notion of “static acceptance” rather than acceptance being the living focal point of radical conversion. Acceptance does not expect a person to stay where he is.
Do you agree with that?

LOL! That’s what I mean. The wording made it sound like that.
As if he’s got a contagious illness and someone can “catch” his homosexuality!
Maybe not his homosexuality, but certainly his sinfulness can infect others.
