It seems that you going to have to say that the Church is doing the devils work by pandering to modern distinctions of "depraved acts"

It would appear that’s your position, not mine. 😃

I agree that calling homosexuals “sodomites” is evil.

How sad to see Catholics descend to such lows. No good comes from this, and certainly no change of heart, rather, unnecessary hardening of heart. Only pure evil can come from it. No wonder why our world is so full of lack of peace, when it is torn apart by extremists and fundamentalists – which includes some Catholics, apparently.

You guys should be deeply ashamed of yourselves.
You are hereby warned as well.
Now I’m confused. By quoting verbatim [including emphasis] what Washington wrote, I merely responded to someone who made a claim that the founding fathers were champions of homosexual rights, to illustrate what was his view of it as a founding father. There is no reason to believe he was unique in his view since the soldier in question was convicted for violating a military law against sodomy. The law wouldn’t have existed if the founding fathers were tolerant of homosexual activity.

Ever since the Stonewall Riots 40 years ago, homosexuals have been telling us that their sex acts are normal and natural; they even have had “Gay Pride” parades every year. Full recognition, acceptance, and tolerance by society of these acts as equal to heterosexual acts has been the goal of the homosexual movement ever since. Lawrence v. Texas was advocated by the homosexual movement all the way up to and including the Supreme Court to overturn the Texas anti-sodomy laws, which they won. The word “sodomy” was used a number of times in oral argument oyez.org/cases/2000-2009/2002/2002_02_102#argument by Paul M. Smith, attorney for the gay lobby and the various justices, including those who voted in favor of the gays, e.g., Souter and Breyer.

In view of Lawrence v. Texas, the Gay Pride parades, and what gays have said themselves, there is no reason to believe that “sodomy” is an objectionable term. Now you are indignantly taking exception.

My friend, I think you should get the homosexual message straight before hurling threats.

It is interesting to note, however, that when activists ask for tolerance, they are implicitly admitting that there is something wrong with their behavior. After all, you don’t need to ask people to “tolerate” good behavior. Mother Teresa never had to ask for tolerance. – F. Turek, Correct, Not Politically Correct

And that (the homosexualist message) is being missed by some including fellow Catholics who wittingly or unwittingly buy into the play book of gay activism. They appear uncaring of or oblivious to aiding homosexualists succeed in dictating language of their own liking for use by all. The phenomenon plays out even here in a philosophy subforum of a Catholic website.

The insistence of replacing clear terms (sodomy, sodomite) in all discourse that have to do with homosexual behavior started with the removal by APA as a mental disorder in the DSM. The clinical and generalized term (homosexual), which almost always require further clarification, is not neutral enough, and is hereby relegated to the back in favor of a politically loaded term (gay) for a sanitized packaging of a physically if not also a mentally debilitating sexual behavior. It is no surprise that homosexual activists would like the disuse of words that remind people of the wrongness of the act.

Sodomite => homosexual => gay

just like

Adulterer => polygamist => polyamorous

The trick is in the packaging, as any smart businessman/woman would say!

Why are you so eaten about the idea of calling them by their political name? I am sorry, but what you are saying is based on irrational paranoia. Calling them gay instead of sodomite is not going to effect your case if you do in fact have a valid argument.

**Calling them gay instead of sodomite is not going to effect your case if you do in fact have a valid argument. **

You apparently have never read Orwell’s 1984.

When sodomites call themselves gay, they are proving the prediction of Orwell. And those who fall for the euphemism are complicit in the political corruption of language.

**Newspeak. **

👍

According to Orwell in 1984, the totalitarian state will transform the English language to be politically correct. The old words will disappear from the dictionary, and dictionaries will get increasingly smaller reflecting the dumb-down intent of educating the public.

For example (if he were living today) Orwell might refer to the word “sodomy” as Oldspeak (his own label for words that have been trashed), and the word “gay” as Newspeak (transforming a negative word to a positive one).

The most interesting one:

“All animals are created equal; but some are more equal than others.” 😉

Part one:

I can’t help but feel sorry for some of our uber-Catholics here. There are so many serious issues facing organized religion and yet I sit and read this extremely harsh (anti-Gay) rhetoric in the guise of blindly supporting the Church; they are apparently forgetting how much room there is for dissent and how many major differences of opinion there have been in 2000 years. Can we really pretend we are unaware that so many good priests, organists, choir directors, teachers; who are perpetually single are almost certainly a high percentage homosexual? How can it be ignored that the ancient world primarily felt same sex acts were temptations for all men (ignoring women completely) and that even the word homosexuality or the concept of a same sex orientation as we understand it today didn’t exist? I don’t think the Catholic Church is threatened in the least by a healthy, honest debate.

First and most importantly, after much reading I am still mystified as to how the Church can admit same sex attraction is completely beyond the control of most homosexual individuals and yet say it is severely disordered and require chastity of those so inclined. Needless to say, despite weekly Mass and lots of prayers, I was not 100% successful in maintaining abstinence in my own early life. While it is an obvious statement to say in a pluralist society a majority will not have to or even desire to abide by the Catholic playbook, many here comment as if it is a forgone conclusion.

What if the Bible really has been misunderstood on homosexuality? Seriously, imagine for just a moment that the Church has completely changed her position. (They have made some pretty major adjustments in the past. It can happen.)…So finally, they realize that using the word “abomination” for eating shellfish and male/male sex really cannot be equally offensive to God. What if only certain male/male sex is referring to a Holiness code of another time and place far removed from our own? How can so many here and elsewhere be so absolutely sure when things like slavery have been abolished, women can vote, and too many things to mention here have changed? No not all change is good, I grant, and I’m certainly not suggesting that anything goes, but again; readers here have consistently ignored, downplayed or contradicted themselves on the simple fact that homosexuals have always been here, always will be; the question is are we going to continue pretending that being unfair (denying for just one example the 1000 benefits that go along with marriage) to them has any good effect?

No one has answered if the children of homosexuals by whatever method are less deserving of benefits than heterosexual couples’ children.

Obviously there are overwhelming positives in the Catholic Church, far more Truth there than anyplace comparable or I wouldn’t be there. But I think pulling out Orwell, and making accusations of how debilitating and unhealthy a Gay lifestyle is ignores all the societal factors that go into it. Non acceptance at Church, work, your family and friends. The constant hiding…If you think homos have so many rights, and privileges and everything is so peachy, try walking down the street in a conservative town doing what straight lovers would do – hold hands, cuddle, even kiss a bit and see what happens…Try putting your same sex partner’s photo on your desk at work. A million things hetero people take for granted.

Do you have any idea how I felt reading in the mid 1970s in a library book that my lifelong attraction was a mental illness? I was an absolute mess internally for years and even tried to kill myself. Outwardly very successful, but inside scared to death, hiding, pretending to like girls… I guess me and so many Gay teens didn’t hear the “love the sinner, hate the sin” stuff. Where would an overwhelming majority of us get these ideas? Why do Gay teens kill themselves at three times the rates of regular teens? Even now, watching “A very British sex scandal” (story from the 1950’s) as I noticed no one commented on, where one could be (and many were) imprisoned for LIFE for homosexual activity. Gee, you talk about a “homosexual agenda” what do you think was going on here? Wealthy homosexuals were shaken down, average ones dragged through the system, their life ruined by loss of family, job, place to live… everyone was involved from the police being agent-provocateurs, and manufacturing evidence all the way up to the prosecutors and judges. Law enforcement people (also in the 1950s) had meetings with others from America and other parts of the world and worried that if homos were in high places, they were more likely to be blackmailed and communism would win out. This of course affected military and other employment and social policies. Sounds like an anti-Gay agenda to me. So, yes, absolutely, in the backdrop of this, Gays want ALL their rights! Step on someone long enough and hard enough, they will become militant. This isn’t a surprise, it is inevitable!

I see that no one is advocating termination of welfare for single mothers, outlawing divorce or taking the Church truly to task for the decades long coverup of sex scandals. Or was that human error,(?) but there can be none in other policies such as the one about homosexuality, on the newest of ALL sciences, human sexuality and psychology? (Most people barely are aware that physics, chemistry and other physical sciences are several hundred years old, but psychology is barely over 100). Note also that in Michigan alone there are 50,000 unwed births annually & the divorce rate?

What of evidence at NewScientist.com that the homosexual brain responds to same sex pheromones the way heterosexual brains respond to opposite sex pheromones WHEN the subjects didn’t even know what chemicals they were exposed to? Or that autopsies show Gay brains are different?

Part 2

What do you think is going to happen if homosexuals get their full rights? Remember even as Britain and America spent millions incarcerating homosexuals in the last century, most other countries were far less severe, even tolerant. (ie Scandinavia). What major detrimental changes have happened there, tolerant now for decades, SPECIFICALLY due to tolerance of homosexuality? What has happened in Canada, same sex marriage has been legal there for 8 years? Five or six years for Massachussetts. Has the sky fallen?

Let’ me be perfectly clear that I have only and always advocated loving, caring committed (marital) relationships, I have never advocated promiscuity or sex with children or anything abusive. I have provided reference books by law professors to say that same sex marriage will not lead to polygamy, polyamory, or animal marriage. Will any here read them or does everyone here know it all?

I loved growing up in Church, going with all my family, neighbors and friends. The Church has an important role to play in our society and it is increasingly losing membership. I do realize that no organization can be all things to all people, but we forget how radical Jesus was for his time. The fact that he didn’t say a single word about homosexuality. In the late 1800s my Polish ancestors** mortgaged their homes** to build magnificent cathedrals in my city. I want the Church to be that important and respected again. I hope that someday I can be a fully respected part of it. Peace to all.

This is an argument i have made supporting the legality of gay rights.
  1. A state that is not compelled by divine law, can only make judgments based upon pragmatic and utilitarian values.
  2. While it is true that in the eyes of Christianity homosexual behavior does not fulfill the moral virtue of a human being teleologically speaking, it is not evident on pragmatic or utilitarian grounds that gay marriage or the adoption of children by gay couples is immoral. The state cannot recognize moral values that transcend pragmatic or utilitarian considerations.
  3. Given premise 1 and 2, Moral rights is not the same thing as Legal rights
  4. Therefore the state is legally justified in supporting gay marriage and the adoption of children by gay couples because…
  5. Any possible moral errors in respect of divinity are beyond the knowledge of the state, and thus the state is invincibly ignorant to any divine testimony or authority.
  6. Thus a state is necessarily pluralistic since it cannot oppose anything on the basis of religion or belief.
Conclusion: Therefore if you support the split between church and state, you have to support gay rights despite any moral beliefs to the contrary.
Oh, my. You are being decieved in believing this. All legislation is someone’s moral view over anothers! Christians have every right and opportunity to support moral legislation in fact as not only a witness to their faith for others but being true to their faith through their actions.

A person may have a moral agenda for attempting to make something law, but the acceptance of any moral belief by a circular system of law is based upon the pragmatic realities that such a belief may provide to society, and not what that morality religiously represents. The legal system is not a religious entity, and thus there are necessarily inherent limitations to how it can rationally define the moral or immoral. So yes, the moral beliefs of one people can and do override other moral beliefs; just like the belief that there is nothing evidently wrong with homosexual marriage and that therefore there is nothing to validly merit legal sanctions against it, is now overriding the religious belief that homosexuality is wrong. Why? Because the religious sanction against gay marriage is based upon a very particular definition of morality that requires certain things to be ontologically true of reality that is not self evidently true of reality. It is neither rationally or pragmatically evident to circular law. The reason for this is because the belief that heterosexuality is the only legitimate end to human sexuality is difficult to demonstrate without religious assumptions or attempting to prove the existence of God itself. In other words you would have to prove the objectivity of the teleological nature of Catholic morality to a court of law.

Be my guest.

If you cannot do that, admit that it is you that has been deceived by your country in to thinking it gives a dame about your moral beliefs.

Because a person can be gay without being a sodomite.

A gay person can (and should) live a chaste lifestyle in accord with the Church. I don’t think anyone here has an issue with that

The act of sodomy is a sinful act, so there needs to be a distinction that ‘gay’ does not cover.

Granted, ‘active homosexual’ might be a better term, but even then it has openings for inaccuraacy. ( a homosexual who regularly excercises could be legitimately called an ‘active’ homosexual)

‘unchaste homosexual’ would be the closest accurate equivelent

Your definitions are fallacious and is greatly illuminating your ignorance on the matter. The word “Gay” is a political identity which represents their sexual beliefs just as much as their sexual preference; and so is the word “homosexual”. The church doesn’t have a problem with using those words.

If you want to use the word sodomite that’s between you and God. I am not interested in whatever else you have to say on the matter.

Your definitions are fallacious and is greatly illuminating your ignorance on the matter. .
Correct, I view this issue first as an excercise in Moral Theology, that is why the distictions are appropriate. Politcal terms are meaningless to the Church, so why should they have any real meaning for me?

I have no issue with people who are gay and chaste, I have an issue with people who are gay and sodomites.

The first are living in accord with the teachings of Christ and His Church, the second live opposed to those.

So terms to identify the two classes of individuals become important.

I will use the term homosexual or gay when it applies, and I will use the term sodomite (as a technical definition meaning one who has engaged in the act of sodomy) when it applies. Why would anyone have an issue with that?

Yes it reminds me of the “anti-religious bigots.” They are the poster child for intolerance. They espouse their “religious secularism” as if it is true progress all the while trying to deny Christians their constitutional right to free speech and to vote their conscience.

God bless.
Do you have an example of this? I have seen the claim made but never seen it substantiated that Christians are denied freedom of speech or denied suffrage for being Christian. However Christian and societal persecution of gays is very easily documented. The entire premise of this thread and the comments made here are a case in point.
