Applause is a positive response of approval. Kind of like a loud response of the word Amen.
I disagree with the statement made by Pope Benedict.
At times, missionary priest or lay people have been on hand to ask for donations. Of times, parishioners have applauded their work.
The is nothing irreverent in that kind of applause.

Hearing applause at Mass is very different from the atmosphere I should expect to find in a Catholic church. I feel very uncomfortable in parishes where this is the atmosphere. It’s as if people aren’t in the full realization that they’re physically in the presence of God in the Eucharist and soon after the applause you’ll likely find a mad rush to the door with dozens of conversations starting up, and perhaps only one or two people actually remaining in the pews to pray. This is quite a break from what Catholic worship has been for the majority of the existence of the Church and that’s more or less what Pope Benedict points out. You can’t disagree with facts.
