Poll: Protestant a good thing?

You are right though we shouldn’t be negative, I see very little of it on this board. I encourage you to point it out as sometimes Catholics do go a little overboard, we all as Christians do get a lot of flak for our beliefs.

I have said before though that many non-denominatinal Christians will be primarily focused on external appearances. Judge not from appearances but from the truth. Seek the truth and open your heart for it.

What kept me from investigating even a closer relationship to Jesus, was the Christians I knew. This was even before coming back to the Church I was more comfortable with my life not committing to anything. This is common from our own bickering between the divisions in Christianity. I have problems trying to spread the gospel just because of the divisions in Christianity, it is a scandal. Just look what Muslims think about Christians.

I quite agree in 99% of what you say. My only disagreement is the second sentence of the above quote. I’ve read far to many of your posts to believe your heads in the sand. Simply read the negitive postings in this thread concerning Non- Catholic Christians. The one writer who labled people Heritics in upper case. On reflection I don’t know if it’s laughable or sad. That anyone would lable a group without having a grasp of the definition. Dan

That would be me I said those who leave the Catholic Church are heretics now Protestants aren’t heretics per say they just don’t have the whole truth.

This non devout Catholic who neglects the rights and obligations of his Faith is in a bad way. He’s not in a state of Sanctifying Grace, and is on the wrong road.

If he discovers Christ in a Protestant setting he is he may or not be in worse shape.

If he really did embrace Christ at some past time then I agree he would be an apostate. However, it is very hard to know.

If he were so poorly catecized in the Faith to not know Christ, then he would not be denying anything he ever had, so he wouldn’t be an apostate (in my opinion). This is why we are to never judge others - we simply cannot know.

So, he is either a little better off in the sense that he has begun his journey to Christ, or he is worse off. He may have a kind of natural grace in his soul, or no grace at all. I cannot believe that he can go from a position of no Santifying Grace (Catholic guilty of grave sin) to a position of Sanctifying Grace by renouncing thr Faith. So, he either continues his journey back to Christ and a life of Grace, or he does the best he can where he is. Were he a friend of mine, I would certainly be praying for him, and doing my best to help him back to the fullness of the Faith.

Please forgive me for not being able to read all of the posts all the way through yet.

I don’t think it’s a good thing that they left, but at the same time, I can’t necessarily say it’s a bad thing if they are developing a relationship with God that was not recognized before. And maybe that newfound relationship will bring the person back to the Catholic Church, especially once they realize that they’re missing the Eucharist by not being Catholic.

I believe that if someone truly knew that the Catholic Church was the True Church of Christ, he would never leave it. I know that the Catholic Church teaches that it is the True Church, but I am personally amazed at how many people do not know that. I have had to explain the Eucharist to a Catholic, only to have the reply that “nobody believes in it,” and it’s “obviously not real.” I have also heard several other Catholics say that they don’t believe it matters if you’re Catholic or Protestant, or even non-Christian. They were shocked to hear what the Church REALLY teaches. These were all college-aged students, so I don’t know if that had something to do with it. So I would say it’s possible to not know that the Catholic Church is the True Church…or maybe it would be more correct to say that it’s possible to not understand the truth.

I know someone like this. They never really knew the Truth though. 1970’s feel good “catholicism” is what she knew. But now her husband and whole family (unfortunaley she isn’t) very much becoming more and more Catholic in their understanding of scripture. Keep people like this in you prayers.

I’m having trouble following your logic. Let me put it to you this way. A Heritic, by definition, is one who knowingly turns away from God and Jusus. These aren’t my words, but the words of St. Thomas. Any Christian, does believe in God and Jesus. They may be termed Schismatics but not all Schismatics are Heritics. The ones that are, are those who turn to Paganism, Naturalism, et al. Dan

I read your entire post and firmly agree. But please don’t put me in their catagory. I am a Catholic but some of the writers spewing Anti-Protestant vitrol make me ashamed of the fact. However think positive, Protestants are providing therapy for these folk. They have to hate some person or group. They no longer have blacks, Jews, Hispanics et al, to openly hate. Protestants are fair game now, if called on it they can laugh it off as a religious dicussion. In defending fellow Christians I have, in all likelyhood, sealed my fate on this forum. Take care Dan
