[NOTE: THIS IS A CANADIAN POLL]

I read this story after waking up today.
My heart dropped out – I try writing letters to the editor, I pray, I discuss these issues on occasion. I am feeling more and more embarrassed to be a Canadian.😦
Poll shows wide support for abortion rights, gay marriage

Poll shows wide support for abortion rights, gay marriage.
The nationwide survey commissioned by Postmedia News and Global TV, which examined the state of Canadian values, revealed that a majority would support a law that establishes rules on when a woman can’t have an abortion, such as during the last trimester of her pregnancy. But support for an outright ban on all abortions is weak.
On the same-sex marriage law, which the Tories criticized while in opposition but have not reversed, a majority of Canadians are now quite happy with the status quo of allowing gays and lesbians to get married
And on the issue of capital punishment — which Harper says he personally supports in certain circumstances but will not put forth as a new law — two-thirds of Canadians favour the death penalty.
Holy Michael Archangel, defend us in the day of battle; be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. – May God rebuke him, we humbly pray: and do thou, Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God thrust down to hell Satin and all the wicked spirits, who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Poll done earlier this year by Angus Reid in Canada showed

51% believe there should be laws which outline when a woman can have an abortion in Canada; 37% think there should be no laws on this matter and want a woman to have the unrestricted right to have an abortion at any time up to the moment of birth

60% believe there should be laws which outline whether a woman can have an abortion based solely on the gender of the fetus; 30% think a woman should have the unrestricted right to have an abortion in any circumstance

This is better than nothing. In the United States, overturning Roe v. Wade would simply leave the issues to the states. The states would have to do their own work at outlawing Roe v. Wade state-by-state. Some states have been successful at reducing the number of abortions, i.e. Mississippi and Wyoming. Mississippi has been the seat of incremental legislation to outlaw abortion, i.e. the Personhood Amendment. 96% of Wyoming countries have no abortion provider at all. resistinc.org/newsletters/articles/pro-choice-organizing-%E2%80%9C-equality-state%E2%80%9D
The state agency has reported zero Wyoming abortion procedures to the CDC for the past few years. “Long story short,” McBride said, “we’re required by law to report that data. And for all of 2010, all of 2011 and 2012 to date, we have zero reported … Not a single one.”

Wyoming has only one doctor who will perform the procedure in the entire state. NARAL’s national office gives it a D+ grade for the burdens it imposes on abortion. According to the CDC, in 2007 it only had 9 abortions and all of these occurred under 13 weeks of age for the unborn baby. So the pro-life community should focus on restricting abortion in the third trimester since most Canadians support this. 🙂

Things aren’t looking good in the Great White North.

What our country is crying out for is the mass reevangelization of its people.

Right and how unfair it would be for a woman in one state to have free will and choice on the issue and in a neighboring or another state not to. Not everyone can afford to relocate to a state more suited to their views. That’s the problem with always leaving everything to the states.

You really like finding polls, don’t you?

As a non-Canadian I am skeptical about this. There is no link in the article directing to the poll itself. I don’t know about Canada, but here in America our statisticians are notorious for fudging the numbers. So I wouldn’t take this seriously until I saw the actual numbers and not some reporters claim on the numbers.

I thought gay marriage was already legal in Canada. My son is gay and he says it is…also that gay partners can get on each other’s health insurance.

Unborn does not get free will or choice in whether they live or die. They deserve protection as a baby just born does

Here is a similar poll from a couple years ago.

visioncritical.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/2010.08.03_Abortion_CAN.pdf

The results seem similar to what is cited in the first post.
Browsed through the poll and several things immediately jumped out to me.

**[1] - The poll does not specifiy who was polled, just random 1,022 Canadians. However in fine print, the poll states: **"[the poll]randomly selected Canadian adults who are Angus Reid Forum panelists. The results have been statistically weighted according to the most current education, age, gender and region Census data to ensure samples representative of the entire adult population of Canada. Discrepancies in or between totals are due to rounding."
This alone screams red flags.

[2] - Some of the questions asked are confusing, whether on purpose or by mistake. For example:
“A woman can have an abortion at any time during her pregnancy, with no restrictions whatsoever”
That question is slightly misleading, because a woman can have an abortion any time with no restrictions. However the question as to whether the woman may have an abortion with no restrictions.

Not saying the poll is wrong, I’m just saying I’m still skeptical.

Reminds me of each state being allowed to decide whether black slaves have the same rights as white workers (and should thus be emancipated), have some of the same rights (and thus should be better treated), or have none of the same rights (and thus should continue to face severe hardship).

Let’s simply acknowledge that abortion is the reincarnation of slavery in terms of the big injustice of our time.

Reading this made me think of a GK Chesterton quote I read recently: " Right is right , even if nobody does it. Wrong is wrong even if everybody is wrong about it. "
I thought I would share that with you.

Man is evil bu nature.
And the Catholic Church is not democratic by nature !!!

Faithful Catholics, and faithful Christians of all denominations, will recognize this as a sign that Christ will come again. All of the other Catholics and Christians, go back to believing Obama is going to change the world.

Not sure what it means to you… but I applaud you one fighting the good fight for PRO-LIFE! Please keep up the good work.

How can you speak about fairness and the right of an individual to snuff out the existence of another before they even get to experience life? That isn’t fair.

I am struck by your message that you cannot be practicing gay or pro abort and still be Catholic. The Church counts everyone who has ever been confirmed as Catholic. Some of these people are practicing gay and some are pro abort. Some attend Mass and receive Holy Communion with others who are also not living in accordance with official doctrine (e.g. divorced and remarried with no annulment etc.) The Church takes no action against them, except perhaps from time to time to refuse communion to a public figure. These folks call themselves Catholic. There are quite a number of people around here who are already working for Obama’s reelection; I see them at Mass on Sundays and have for years. They call themselves Catholic and sure act like it. Nobody turns them away. I think the Catholic tent may be a whole lot more inclusive and complicated than your message indicates.

While I’m a bit confused by you saying “before they even get to experience life” if you believe a human person exists and experiences life at the moment of conception with full personhood rights, it’s not important to me answering. I’m in the US so do you mean how can I in the US? First of all because I don’t believe I have the right to force what I believe on this issue onto society at large. And the SCOTUS ruled on Roe V Wade nearly 40 yrs ago giving women the right to choose during the 1st trimester with state restrictions allowed after. The issue causes a clash of rights. Rights of the unborn vs the privacy rights of women. In an imperfect world, and in a country of plural beliefs, one which is not a theocracy, the SCOTUS decision I believe attempted a balance of this clash in rights. Leaving us with an interpretaton of secular law by which to govern the land on this issue on an imperfect earth. And I speak solely for myself, but I personally as a Christian, not a Catholic, and not of another conservative faith group, after 40 yrs can’t devote such a degree of my time on this single issue if I want more time to devote to getting other things done for Christ. I respect and understand the perspective of others and hope this helps you understand mine. If not, there’s nothing more I can say to help you understand my perspective and we will have to agree to disagree in good faith. In any case God bless you along your faith walk. Peace.
