I’m organizing a discussion night for our young adult community in our parish and the topic will be “The year in review: The top 10 catholic headlines of 2006”

In your opinion which do you think make the top ten?

Immediately I can think of 3:
  • Pope’s encyclical on Love - I think he did this in January?
  • The whole Muslim fiasco
  • No gays admitted in the priesthood
What else???

Women priests/bishops ordained?
Iraqi war?
Death sentence to Saddam Hussein?
something stem cell related?

The election - how Catholics switched back to voting more Democratic than Republican this time

What does “the muslim fiasco” mean?

Are there really 10 important Catholic news stories for the past year? There’s lots of insider mumbo jumbo, like who was appointed to various dicasteries at the Vatican, the defection of Archbishop Milingo, rumors about a universal indult for the Tridentine mass, possible reconciliation with the SSPX, the process of changing the English translation of the missal. But as far as Catholic stories that are important to the average person, I think 5 or 6 is a more reasonable goal. Most of the important Catholic stories are longer term ones that consequently don’t make the news.

One not mentioned so far is the serious decline in Catholics in Iraq since the war there, likewise in Lebanon over the past few decades (especially since the Israeli invasion this year), and also among Palestinians in recent years.

Although it doesn’t have much to do with reality or the Church, the DaVinci Code book and movie probably merits a mention for the furor that it roused, much of it within Catholic circles.

  • Refusal to extend t the indult in the USA which permits Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion from purifying sacred vessels.
  • The statement this past Saturday that “pro multis” must be translated at “for many” and not “for all” and it gives the bishops a 1 to 2 years to fix the liturgy!

Catholic politicians who defy Church teaching (ie what is the separation of Church and State and what is the liberty of the church

Great idea! From past experience I thought I would offer you a tip (not sure if you’ve done this before or not). A parish in our town had a young adult discussion evening once and it turned into complete chaos and left many people confused. It became an outlet for complaining about the church on issues such as not allowing women to be ordained, the church has too many rules, etc.

Here is what I think could have helped:
  1. A strong facilitator who KNOWS the topics to be discussed and what Rome’s position is on them. It would help to have the catechsim and hard-copies of other documents with you with pertinent passages highlighted so people realize you are conveying what the Church teaches. The person in charge of this in our town wanted a ‘free and open discussion’ and no one was prepared to convey what the Church has to say about the topics that came up - leaving everyone to make up their own minds and many confused. Non-Catholics showed up (friends of the young adult Catholics) which muddied things up even more.
If this is being sponsored by a parish, I believe there is an obligation to be able to convey the Church’s position when questions or concerns are raised - it doesn’t mean everyone will agree or that you don’t allow discussion, but at least people will know what the Church says as they discuss the topic at hand.

2 Limit the discussion of each topic before-hand so you have an ‘out’ if things get too out of hand or tempers start to flare (as they did here). You always have the option of extending the time-frame if fruitful discussion is taking place.

Thanks Elzee!! Actually we’ve held these discussion nights (we call them coffee nights) every month for the past two years. Happens every first Friday night of the month. Past topics have included:
  • Top 10 Commandments of Dating
  • Da Vinci Code
  • Faith & Conscience
  • The Sacraments
  • Human Relations
  • Pain & Suffering
  • The role of men and women in Church and Life
  • God & Politics
  • God & Technology
  • God & Science (Medical)
  • Atheism from a Catholic perspective…
  • Ecumenism
I get exactly what you mean about it being a venting session about what is wrong with the Church and that it’s position not being presented and thus leaving people confused. This has happened to us at times, although it’s minimized by the format we use. We pick a topic and then we ask questions related to that topic. So people get to answer the questions. Sometimes the questions lend themselves to people venting and others don’t.

We’ve learned now and now I know that we have to frame the question in a ways that allows Church teachings to surface and also be prepared with the actual Church teaching on the issue.

We love our Coffee nights and it is by far the most popular event he hold.

Thanks for your feedback!!

ps. There is always a pastor present too at the coffee nights and it is held in the rectory basement.

Our parish has used a format that is called Theology on Tap. I think its initial use may have been in Ohio. Try googling Theology on Tap in quotes. It has met in a local tavern so the young folks(over 21) can have a brew or two or coffee if prefered. Topic and speaker are published a head of time. I liked Andrea’s list. News Stories can be interesting, but their exclusive use throws the series out of balance. All news is not good news.

I’ve heard of Theology on Tap and I think we even have it here in Vancouver. I’ve never attended (maybe I should!!) The coffee night format is slightly different in the sense that we don’t have a speaker and it’s more of a discussion forum (very muich like this one here online.) Someone asks a question and we all get to answer and discuss.

Not sure what you mean by the exclusive use of (news stories?) throws the series out of balance… you mean the Theology on Tap series (if this were a part of that)?

And as for the comment that all news is not good news… I see it as God makes good out of everything… even bad news 😉

God’s news is always good news 👍
