Vital Immanence
  1. However, this Agnosticism is only the negative part of the system of the Modernist: the positive side… consists in what they call vital immanence. This is how they advance from one to the other. Religion, whether natural or supernatural, must, like every other fact, admit of some explanation. But when Natural theology has been destroyed, the road to revelation closed through the rejection of the arguments of credibility, and all external revelation absolutely denied, it is clear that this explanation will be sought in vain outside man himself. It must, therefore, be looked for in man; and since religion is a form of life, the explanation must certainly be found in the life of man. Hence the principle of religious immanence is formulated. Moreover, the first actuation, so to say, of every vital phenomenon… is due to a certain necessity or impulsion; but it has its origin, speaking more particularly of life, in a movement of the heart, which movement is called a sentiment. Therefore, since God is the object of religion, we must conclude that faith, which is the basis and the foundation of all religion, consists in a sentiment which originates from a need of the divine. This need of the divine, which is experienced only in special and favourable circumstances, cannot, of itself, appertain to the domain of consciousness; it is at first latent within the consciousness, or, to borrow a term from modern philosophy, in the subconsciousness, where also its roots lies hidden and undetected.
Should anyone ask how it is that this need of the divine which man experiences within himself grows up into a religion, the Modernists reply thus: Science and history, they say, are confined within two limits, the one external, namely, the visible world, the other internal, which is consciousness. When one or other of these boundaries has been reached, there can be no further progress, for beyond is the unknowable. In presence of this unknowable, whether it is outside man and beyond the visible world of nature, or lies hidden within in the subconsciousness, the need of the divine, according to the principles of Fideism, excites in a soul with a propensity towards religion a certain special sentiment, without any previous advertence of the mind: and this sentiment possesses, implied within itself both as its own object and as its intrinsic cause, the reality of the divine, and in a way unites man with God. It is this sentiment to which Modernists give the name of faith, and this it is which they consider the beginning of religion.
 
I will break the string of Pius X fans; I voted for Pope John XXIII. Not only as my favorite Pope, but also as one of the greatest human beings of the last 110 years. Few during that time come close. He was a great man before he was Pope, and his five short years in the Papacy brought this remarkable man to the attention of the whole world.

I often give thanks that Pius XII did not promote Archbishop Montini to Cardinal (“Thank you, Holy Spirit”) as that likely would have meant that we would have lost the opportunity to experience the true man of God that Angelo Roncalli was as pastor not only to Catholics, but to all the world. He is the only one of the group that I think we can really consider as Pope to the world, and was received as such by all people. Likely few before, and probably none since.

One thing that sealed the deal for me was when I found out that Roncalli read a chapter from one of my favorite spiritual books, “The Imitation of Christ”, every day of his priestly life.

There are certainly a number of people with a great affection for Pope John XXIII. God rest his soul!
 
I chose Pope Pius XII! Hopefully his canonization speeds up and the truth about him and all the good he did during WWII is revealed. He upheld and loved Our Blessed Mother and defined her Assumption. According to a vision Padre Pio had, Pius XII in in heaven!

Anyone who reads his biography, “I will be called John”, can’t help falling in love with this man!
 
I voted for Pope Saint Pius X as well. I have read some online about him and am very interested. Can anyone recommend a good biography of him? Thanks! 🙂

He’s doing a good job in his pastoral duties
etc etc etc

Next would be Pope Pius X since he’s a saint or Pope John Paul II since from what I know about him he was a great man.
 
John Paul II
why? - He gave us the writings and talks on the Theology of the Body that is SOOO important for all of us to hear about in our currently over-sexualized world. He had great vision and was a man of unity. He, too, will one day be declared a Saint (I pray)!
 
I voted for Pope St Pius X. For anyone who is interested I started a group a while back here called “Devotees of Pope St Pius X”.
 
I don’t know much about the Popes, unfortunately, but I had to vote JPII because I just love him so much. I just ordered this book on sale at Ignatius Press for $3 and can’t wait to read it!

Sometimes seeing it brings tears to my eyes. What an incredible image. Our Holy Father finally resting safe in the arms of our Holy Mother.

I wasn’t aware that I had a lot in common with Pope John Paul 11. It wasn’t until I read his life story that I found out that we had the same interest in art and other interests.

I did a painting for him of Our blessed Mother holding Baby Jesus in her arms and I hand delivered it to him at the Vatican in May 1996. He was very ill on that day with his gal-bladder medical problem. So I met with some priests who happen to be American priests.
It was an exciting moment for me. It was also unbelieveable that I was allowed into the Vatican. They say nobody gets in without a formal invitation. People are super surprised when I tell them my story.

I did get a letter from the Pope stating the painting brought him much joy. He sent me his Apostolic blessing.

When the Pope came to visit Los Angeles, California… a photographer took a photo of his airplane and there was a super large spirit of an Angel guarding the airplane. It was an awsome photo. PEACE, LaLucia

For me, it has to be Blessed John Paul II. He was pope for the majority of my life, and being Polish-American, I felt more of a connection with him.

Though, at the end of the day, he was a scholar and just had a huge heart. That does it for me 🙂
 
Pope Pius XII. While he did many wonderful things, his intervention saved my family and other Jewish families during WWII, by showing the Compassion of our Savior, through acts that spoke of Christ’s love without saying words, he won the hearts of my family to submit to the Sacred and Immaculate Hearts. He has been defamed as an anti-semite by those who do not know the truth.

Pope Benedict XVI gets my respect and prayers that with the battles he faces for the glory of Christ, and the restoration of peace in the Church, he will model himself in the likeness of Christ and Christ’s vicar Pius XII.
