Polygamists See Gay Marriage Ruling Opening Door to Multiple Marriages
Newsmax.

Polygamists cheered the Supreme Court for their gay marriage rulings Wednesday, which they considered one step forward for the legal and social acceptance of multi-person relationships."We polyamorists are grateful to our [LGBT] brothers and sisters for blazing the marriage equality trail,"Practical Polyamory spokeswoman Anita Wagner Illigtold Newsmax.

From a purely secular standpoint, civil marriage has gone from benefits the state offers in order to encourage certain living arrangements to benefits that people who want them can feel entitled to. Since what society might want has no standing compared to letting people live whatever way they see fit–that is, since the electorate seems to think it bigoted and an offense to freedom to not give people whatever they want–I cannot imagine what will stop polygamists from getting bigamy laws struck down, too.

Sure they will be. You watch, the LGBT community will rally against it.

Though polygamists may push to be next, I think that the next push will be for a lowering of age of consent laws, thereby enabling ‘adult-young person marriage.’ I was going to write “adult-child” marriage, but the proponents will be careful to find a better term than that.

The argument will be that girls can obtain the morning after pill at age 15 and younger. They can consent to sex with a 16 year old, why not a 28 year old? They can often get an abortion without parental consent. So, if they can consent to sex, they should be able to consent to marriage. That will be the argument, I think. Age limits will be pushed lower and lower gradually, eventually enabling pederast marriage. Because gender equality will mean that if a girl can consent at age 15, so can a boy, to either a heterosexual or a homosexual marriage. There is more to come. After all, marriage equality is marriage equality.

It might be a toss-up as to who gets there first, polygamists or pederasts or other categories.

I don’t see that happening. The current paternalism discourages early marriage, rather than supporting it. The electorate might be willing to pay for minors to have abortions and birth control pills, so they can pretend they’ve solved the problem of younger and younger sex combined with older and older marriage, but they sure aren’t ready to support a bunch of recently-divorced 16-year-old parents.

I agree with you. I don’t think parents of children will want to see that happening. The older half of that group will be for it but I don’t see that as being enough to sway the vote.

Doesn’t mean there won’t be groups pushing for it.

I hope that you are right and that adult child marriage will be rejected. But it will be on the radar. After all, we give kids free condoms and free birth control pills, and morning after pills at any age because “they’re going to do it anyway.” Those pushing this agenda are going to argue that we’ve already ceded control of kids, allowing them to make their own decisions on sex, so they ought to be able to make their own decisions on marriage.

Twenty years ago, I never expected gay marriage to happen either.

Maybe the polygamists will get legality first. “Marriage equality!”

“One man and one woman.” Well, once you’ve done away with the man/woman issue, I don’t see how our current society would have any problem tackling the “one” question - especially if it involves a church-based “plural marriage” (as in the case of the Fundamentalist LDS groups) and not just the concurrent hook-ups “dignified” by the “polyamory” label. I can really see this happening. The irony, of course, would be that were this to come about, a key justification for such recognition would be its nature as faith- and religion-based — despite the fact that the Church’s position AGAINST the tidal wave of same-sex “marriage” laws is ALSO faith-based.

Hubby and I were discussing this yesterday.

I do believe that the subsequent “door is open” and the “road has been paved” but I think polygamist marriage will be far more complex then gay marriage.

Exactly what would polygamist marriage be defined as? One man and multiple women? One woman and multiple men? Two sets of couples? One single person and a couple? Multiple sets of all of the above?

Could a married couple include others after they’ve already made vows? Do they all have to get married at one time? How would the contract(s) work and be defined?

How would taxes work? How would estates work? How would civil divorce and child custody work?

I’m sure their would be a ton of lawyers who would love to figure out the specifics of polygamy, polyamory, group…whatever you want to call it.

I wouldn’t be toooo sure about that. When I was young, you married before sex, and your husband was expected to support you and his family, (not the Government) and divorce was not the thing to even consider. I never even knew what an abortion was till I was already married with kids. Same with homosexuality. Babies were welcomed not dreaded. And we weren’t in debt up to our elbows. Paid as we bought or saved for it. My husband paid cash for his first new car. The only thing we ever bought “on time” was our home. Payments were $74 a month including taxes and insurance. Life was so much easier and families were closer. And as far as I knew, everyone believed in GOD. Society and school supported the parents in teaching their kids manners, honesty, truthfulness and decency, AND love for their Country! I would give an arm and a leg to go back to the “Good ole Days.” Who would have ever thought I’d be living in days like today. I feel sick about it and scared for our kids future. Most people today don’t even know what their missing. God have Mercy on us. God Bless, Memaw
Have you seen the TV show, “Sister Wives” Their waiting in line I’m sure. Making it seem perfectly “normal”.

I almost wish civil marriage would become so egalitarian that it becomes meaningless, so perhaps everyone could see how ridiculous the idea of “equal rights” is, and it could be restarted as how it was originally meant to be.

Yup…just like abortion… the bleeding hearts kept hammering away telling people that a woman has the right to do what she wants with her own body…men were told to butt out as we had no say in the matter…unless we agreed with them…women who didn’t agree were somehow made to feel as if they were pathetic creatures dominated by male chauvinists…so it is with same sex marriage and now equal rights for same sex couples…anyone who objects is seen as a bigot…someone living in the past…we Christians who object are branded as intolerant hypocrites who preach the love of God but don’t practice what we preach because God loves all people…including homosexuals…so over time we are made to look as if we are the bad guys…our priest told us once that the time is coming when we Catholics (Christians) may face harsh times in defense of our faith

Let the consenting adult polygamists be married.
They have their own sympathetic reality show, so they’re halfway there. The sympathetic “child bride” show, however, let alone the sympathetic “cougar-manchild” show is still unlikely to win the hearts of the public. The moral numbness is not quite that complete yet.

The can is open and the worms are out. From now on ANYthing goes! :imsorry: God forgive us.

I am ok with polygamist marriage for members of religious groups with a standing tradition of belief in polygamy such as the FLDS. For me this is a religious freedom issue. FLDS people legitimately believe that God demands polygamy as seen in the Old Testament. In my mind, preventing them from legally marrying is hindering their religious freedom.

But, yeah, the legalities would be interesting to see worked out.

The biggest thing when it comes to polygamy is that it would be a logistical nightmare. Person X is married to people A and B. B is married to X but not to A, but additionally person B is also married to C, Y, and Z. C is only married to B, but also to D. D is married to E who is also married to Y. No. Possible. Way.

Instead what should happen is that we allow everyone to legally have one spouse, but decriminalize polygamous relationships. Prosecute child and domestic abuse, prosecute welfare fraud, but if people want to live together as one married group or if someone wants multiple spouses don’t waste the time and money investigating, prosecuting, and punishing.
