Why are you so obsessed with what other people do for fun?
Have you ever heard of “lawn darts”? There is your answer…
I was outraged when they banned candy cigarettes. How dare they infringe my rights. I don’t get a fig if they caused stupid people to take up smoking and kill themselves and others with second hand smoke.

45 years later, there is still a scar between my shoulder blades from a lawn darts mishap!

I would not buy my 10 year old a pink SUV nor a pink rifle.

That is not the definition in the FL ballot initiative that is in process.
a) Assault Weapons - For purposes of this subsection, any semiautomatic rifle or shotgun capable of holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition at once, either in a fixed or detachable magazine, or any other ammunition feeding device. This subsection does not apply to handguns.
b) Semiautomatic - For purposes of this subsection, any weapon which fires a single projectile or a number of ball shots through a rifled or smooth bore for each single function of the trigger without further manual action required.
c) Ammunition-feeding device - For purposes of this subsection, any magazine, belt, drum, feed strip, or similar device for a firearm.
I understand. But the law is always behind real life.

Ice skates are not commonly used to kill several people at once.
Neither are Ruger 10/22’s
Flying a plane - at least a certificated one - requires evidence of a government-monitored instruction program with a certified flight instructor. I would feel a lot better about guns if they came with similar requirements.
I never understood the logic behind this argument. People aren’t accidentally shooting other people with guns. If anything, additional training would make them more effective in causing harm. Insufficient training has zero connection to gun deaths.

Planes require training because they are very complicated to fly.

Yes, it’s ridiculous to call a 10/22 an assault rifle.
Can it be used to aim at multiple targets in rapid succession? If yes, then it qualifies to be called an assault rifle.
A 10/22 is not an automatic weapon. The anti-rights left may try to create a new definition, but an assault rifle is automatic.

That is a bizarre definition in that anything but a musket can be fired at multiple targets in ‘rapid succession’. Heck, even a knife fits your need.

I am not interested in descriptions. I am interested in functionality. If you can mow down a group of people, it is a problem.

The usual defense is hunting and target practice. For either of those activities a single-shot weapon is sufficient. They would even qualify as a proper sporting weapon. A machine gun or sub-machine gun is a different kind of weapon. I would like to return a properly pejorative phrase as a reply to your “anti-rights left”, but I don’t wish to be considered non-charitable.

What about the reloading capabilities? There might be knives with multiple blades, which can be expelled with a strong spring and kill at a distance. Again, the reloading could be a problem.

And why does a 10-year-one need a semi-automatic rifle with a magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip? Why does anyone need one?
I don’t know, maybe the parents want their child to know how to use and respect the power of firearms. Maybe the parents want to make sure their child knows that the use of firearms is not the way you settle disputes or “get even “ with an individual or the world.
Maybe the parents want to do something to help solve the gun violence problem the right way: through education and proper training.

I shot 22s when I was 10 years old at YMCA camp. I supervised 10 year olds shooting 22s a few years later as a camp counselor.
If we want kids to know and respect the power and dangers of firearms (semiautomatics are the vast majority of firearms) and how and when and for what purpose to use them, train them. “A well regulated militia “ starts with training. Parents should train their children.

Bingo. That’s the point. That’s the intent.

I’m interested in descriptions, because when the language is perverted in order to deny individual rights it’s important.
If you’re concerned about people being mowed down, it is government that has down the overwhelming share of mowing down citizens in the last 120 years.

That is not the purpose of the second as stated in the prefatory clause, but it certainly is covered by the constitutional protection. The individual gets to decide if it is what they want to use for hunting or targets.
I would like to return a properly pejorative phrase as a reply to your “anti-rights left”, but I don’t wish to be considered non-charitable.
You’re not going to hurt my feelings. I’ve heard all the pejoratives before.

People aren’t accidentally shooting other people with guns.
  • Those people that die from accidental shooting were more than three times as likely to have had a firearm in their home as those in the control group.
  • Among children, the majority (89%) of unintentional shooting deaths occur in the home. Most of these deaths occur when children are playing with a loaded gun in their parent’s absence.

If you’re concerned about people being mowed down, it is government that has down the overwhelming share of mowing down citizens in the last 120 years.
Is that some kind of an excuse? Today no militia (well-regulated or otherwise) could withstand the military of a nation state.

If only people would learn the civilized way of conflict resolution, the whole second amendment would become unnecessary. And to allow every individual to decide his or her wants for hunting of targets, all you do is create a mess.

I am not interested in your feelings. You can use expressions like “anti-rights left” and you can get away with it. I am not interested in exploring the limits.

So submit to authoritarian rule.

Leave it to government to decide?
That’s not how rights work.
I am not interested in your feelings.
And I’m not interested in what you think someone else’s rights should be.

Last time the US fought a Civil War, a significant part of the military joined the insurgents. I suspect a future civil war over the 2nd amendment would have a similar effect. And let’s be honest, a bunch of Pashtun goatherds have done a pretty good job of withstanding the military of two superpowers, so maybe you underestimate the “militia”.

Do you have a choice? Of course you can become a hermit and live in a cave. Does not seem to be too enticing. Of course your mileage may vary.

There are no “society-independent” rights, or “natural rights”. You have the right to do something, or not to do something if the strongest bully on the block - and that would be the nation-state - allows you to do so. It would be nice if everyone would be civilized enough to respect others and be respected by others - as long as no one steps on the other person’s toes, but such a society is unlikely in the near future.

In very small societies, like hippy colonies and small kibbutzes such an arrangement is possible, but not is large societies.

I hope we shall not see it. Because number of the second amendment proponents is shrinking. The mass murders in schools and other places make the unlimited access to weapons unpalatable. And if a civil war would start, it would be the work of the weapon-lovers. (I am not interested to call them weapon fanatics… it would be uncharitable.) Oh, and maybe you missed it: “in the civil war the insurgents LOST.”
And let’s be honest, a bunch of Pashtun goatherds have done a pretty good job of withstanding the military of two superpowers, so maybe you underestimate the “militia”.
In a war ravaged Afghanistan, where the militia received a substantial help from abroad (US included!), and which has absolutely no military or economic value, yes it could have happened. But I would not want to extrapolate from that.

I don’t know, maybe the parents want their child to know how to use and respect the power of firearms. Maybe the parents want to make sure their child knows that the use of firearms is not the way you settle disputes or “get even “ with an individual or the world.
What you are describing is a want, not a need.

Because number of the second amendment proponents is shrinking.
Is it?
The mass murders in schools and other places make the unlimited access to weapons unpalatable.
That certainly hasn’t been seen in voting results.
Oh, and maybe you missed it: “in the civil war the insurgents LOST .”
It was a near run thing and a lot of people on both sides died. Not an outcome I’d look forward to.

I was outraged when they banned candy cigarettes.
We can still buy candy cigarettes at vintage (antique) stores in our section of the country! Northern Illinois). I use them with my uranium glass ashtray–the cigarettes demonstrate what the ashtray is ( believe it or not, some children and young people often have never seen an ashtray).

And besides, candy cigarettes are yummy!
