This is assuming that the “older priests teaching them” weren’t caught up in the progressive fervor themselves. There was a lot going on at the time that engendered a great deal of moral permissiveness in the name of “social justice.”

(EDIT: It should be noted that I am only specifically discussing the Church in the United States. I can’t speak for what was really going on worldwide or whether or not liturgical abuses committed in the wake of Vatican II were common overseas.)

Also, the laity might not have been asked, but neither did they as a whole stand up and decry the liturgical abuses that did happen, due in large part to a lack of proper catechism and theological education. Many people seemed to be as comfortable receiving the message as the priests were in giving it. This is the era that gave rise to the phenomenon now known as “cultural Catholics” - people who accept the forms of Catholic worship while either actively rejecting or simply being ignorant of the substance.
It was my experience that in the 50s and 60s the laity accepted what was being told and what was done. You did not protest. And if there was error, then the priests who felt same should have taken the lead. They didn’t.

After years and generations of being asked to contribute for the purchase of statues, etc., the pastor, supposedly following Vat. II, removed them. If you ask today what happened, your’ told they had to follow the bishop or you’re told they got the wrong info re. Vat. II and this is what happened? Really? Everyone got the wrong information and those thinking it perculiar didn’t fight before their churches were dismantled? But the laity was suppose to fight?

The people in that parish of the 1960s, sent their kids to the parochial school where the nuns gave excellent instruction. Suddenly, all was changed. Yes, there were priests (not in that parish) that said some very progressive things leaving one to wonder do they (priests) really know what they’re talking about? And you kind of back away checking out just what’s going on.

And today what exactly happens to these progressive priests? Are they ever asked to leave?
