Vatican City, May 31, 2017 / 05:54 am (CNA/EWTN News).- On Wednesday Pope Francis said the Holy Spirit has the power to fill us with the hope of Christ, in turn making us Christians vessels that bring hope to others, rather than bitterness or desperation.
“The Holy Spirit makes us not only able to hope, but also to be sowers of hope, that we too are, like him and thanks to him – the “paraclete” – consolers and defenders of our brothers, sowers of hope,” Pope Francis said May 31.
“A Christian can sow bitterness, can sow perplexity, and this is not Christian,” he said, adding: “whoever does this is not a good Christian. Sow hope: sow the oil of hope, sow the fragrance of hope, and not the vinegar of bitterness and hopelessness.”

Okay…hope in Christ. Got it. …why?

How is hope in Christ better than other versions of hope?

This is not expressed well in this article. Hope is not defined.

What are we to have hope in? What does it mean to have hope in Christ? Why hope in Christ when I can have hope in the Dahli Lama? Or hope in my atheist neighbor who’s always nice to me?

Because Christ alone is the way, the truth and the life.

Hope in anything other than union with him is for not.

Pope Francis says:

“It is possible to have this kind of ‘invincible’ hope, he said, because the Holy Spirit helps us to recognize that we are children and heirs of God.”

When the Holy Spirit enables us to appreciate that we are individually a son or daughter of the Lord God Almighty and that collectively we are the children of God, hope takes root in our soul and becomes a protection against fear and despair. When I am stressed, I sometimes say to myself, “I am a daughter of the King” …and when I do I am filled with comfort or resolve or whatever sort of fortitude I most need at that moment. At least that is my experience that comes to mind when I read Pope Francis’ words about hope.

What you just expressed is not expressed in the article. Me thinks oversights like this does not help the cause for evangelism. Perhaps I am wrong and it’s best to be vague regarding Christian hope?
Condemnations? Where? Simple facts.
The Pope condemned the action of sowing bitterness according to the article (the word condemned wasn’t used, but the article said that sowing bitterness is not Christian…of course that is a true statement, but a condemnation nonetheless).

Pope Francis was a bit vague there, but I understand because of our hope in the Resurrection as sons and daughters of God. I think in today’s world, this needs to be spelled out more clearly. My thoughts on that anyway. Maybe it’s a case of ‘those with ears to hear, will hear’. I know Jesus wasn’t all that clear either and many misunderstood Him too.

Thanks.

At the very beginning of the article;

True, which is why he said it and why it was needed to be said.

The political atmosphere in the US is far from spreading hope through the good news of Jesus Christ, but closer to spreading fear and bitterness.

Yes it is evident with the bitterness shown by liberals against President Trump on this forum.

Maybe it would be more efficient for the forum to just open a running anti-Francis thread so that all those who dislike the Pope can vent there, instead of coming into every single thread to criticize every word that passes his lips.

Maybe another thread should be opened for those that accuse people discussing what the Pope says as disliking/bashing him to vent. Instead of coming into every thread and accusing them there.

Why on earth are you bringing U.S. politics into this? The Pope said absolutely nothing about the political atmosphere in the U.S. You alone are bringing it up.

And (I hope I’m expressing this charitably, because it is meant so), statements such as yours are ones that spread fear and bitterness, unnecessarily so.

Politics is a deep rooted part of this forum and was brought into this thread before I
mentioned it and was predictable.

That being said, we are living in a world where negativity and fear is the norm, while hope is nonexistent. Pope Francis message to us is, which are message are you presenting to the world ?

In my humble opinion, there is too much political commentary generally. That being said, politics has taken a dark, unkind turn; and I believe it is not only appropriate but necessary to ask ourselves how we can follow Pope Francis’ guidance to adopt a spiritual hopefulness and to express that hopeful spirituality in our public arena in order to grow hope, faith, and love. “Let your little light shine” in the dark politics of today.

We are at a point in time where politics is part of the battle. Talk about taking a dark unkind turn…when government policy is at odds with the teachings of Jesus and His Church and is involved in the attack on the family then politics is spiritual warfare. That is why Jesus gave us both the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. The Holy Spirit also leads us into all Truth. Unfortunately many inside the Church unknowingly, some maybe even willingly aid the enemy in the guise of ‘doing good’
