The simple response to the OP is: yes, this happened. It was an appalling action by an absolute monarch unconstrained by law or democracy. It took away a child from a family because of religious superstition. at the same time, children were being castrated for the requirements of the papal choir. There is nothing useful to be said in defence of any of this. Anyone concerned with human rights must condemn such things, without equivocation.
