Pope Accepts Cardinal Mahony's Resignation

Cardinal Mahony’s name sounds familiar, but I know very little about him. That USCCB article didn’t give any information about the reason for his resignation. Does anyone know why he resigned? Sorry for my ignorance

He was past the retirement age for a bishop. They’re all required to submit their resignations at age 70. Sometimes acceptance is delayed until a successor is found.

Regardless, there will be many who will not regret his leaving as head of the diocese; myself being one of them.

Yes, I’m one, too. His successor has been here for awhile, though.

This brings up a question about our current pope. I do not intend to say anything against Pope Benedict, who is my favorite of the two popes who have reigned in my lifetime, but just out of curiosity, how did he still remain a cardinal after age 70, and how is he still Pope now, since all bishops are required to retire at that age? This may seem like a stupid question, but I’m still learning.
 
I believe 75 is the mandatory age for bishops to submit their resignation.

FWIW, 80 years is the maximum age of a Cardinal where he can vote for a Pope when needed.

Bishops are required to submit their resignation ta 75. However, sometimes arrangements are made to stay on.
Cardinals are always Cardinals, but they are only allowed to vote in Papal Conclaves until age 80.
Retirement ages only apply to “regular” bishops, the Pope is not subject to those rules.
