In a rare move, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of disgraced Scottish Cardinal Keith Patrick O’Brien from the rights and duties of a cardinal, the Vatican announced on Friday.

Once a cardinal, not always a cardinal. Although the text of the statement does not explicitly say it, I agree with the title of this article: the retired archbishop O’Brien is no longer a Cardinal. The statement says:
The Holy Father has accepted the resignation of the rights and privileges of a Cardinal, expressed in canons 349, 353 and 356 of the Code of Canon Law, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Keith Michael Patrick O’Brien, Archbishop Emeritus of Saint Andrews and Edinburgh, after a long period of prayer. With this provision, His Holiness would like to manifest his pastoral solicitude to all the faithful of the Church in Scotland and to encourage them to continue with hope the path of renewal and reconciliation. press.vatican.va/content/salastampa/en/bollettino/pubblico/2015/03/20/0204/00457.html

I’m always amazed at how someone in such a position can (allegedly) make advances at priests and have a long-term sexual relationship with one of them…and think no one will find out.

.
Hello,

Yes…although I suppose if you are going to engage in such behavior, you’d want to do it with someone who is as committed to keeping it a secret. How that initial conversation goes, though, is…something I’d rather not contemplate.

How many Cardinals and Archbishops does this make in the last two years that have either resigned or been asked to step aside?

Looks like the word is out that this Pope means business.

Just to clarify, Cardinal O’Brien remains a Cardinal.

He resigned the “rights and privileges” of a Cardinal, but not the title itself.

Net effect is that he may not attend a Conclave, Consistory, or take part in roman curial activities.

Some become blinded by power.

I don’t know what it all means, but one pastor once pointed out there are very few men who died as Cardinals who ever became canonized.

Hello,

I have seen articles supporting your initial statement. If that is true, it doesn’t make sense to me, but…so be it.

Supposedly it often happened as a result of drunkenness.

The number of Catholics who have been cardinals in the history of the Church is a very, very tiny percentage of Catholics. There were for centuries only 70 in the whole world. Pray for them, it is a position that makes you target for lots of enemies…especially today.

Original Sin. It not only weakens morals, it weakens good judgement and logic.

Oh, you mean like the “bishop” he just installed in Chile??? Sure looks like he means business to me. Not for nothing, but what has been done to this cardinal for his vile acts?

We’ll assume that a further investigation will take place into this and this will not be another thing swept under the rug until some lawsuits get filed.

(Allegedly), The Prince of Darkness is as crafty as advertized.

You don’t have to add “allegedly”. The overall reality of spiritual warfare has been empirically verified over the last few thousand years, though we of course don’t know
what happened in this particular case. We should continue to pray for all involved.

I was just copying the form of the post of which I was responding. Yes, spiritual warfare is real.

No, but drunkeness does loosen inhibitions or inclinations that would otherwise be restrained when sober.
But maybe that was the reason for drinking in the first place.

Or has this become a circular argument?
