A good point about Crystal Cathedral. However, unlike New York City, parts of which do exist in two dioceses (the Archdiocese of New York and the Diocese of Brooklyn), the City of Los Angeles and Los Angeles County both exist entirely within one diocese, which is the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. The Diocese of Orange is based in another city and County, which is the City of Orange, located in Orange County, to the south of Los Angeles.
I meant the Metropolis of LA (Greater LA?). I’m from the prairies, we don’t have mega-cities here. Greater LA just looks like 1 big city to me.

**Glenn Beck **- "this Pope has shown us that he is extremely conservative on social issues like; living together, birth control, homosexuality…"

This makes me cringe every time I hear something like this. The Pope is Catholic. No Pope can say living in sin, birth control and homosexuality etc are permittable and good. How thick can some people be? This is not directed at Glenn Beck but I think some people are simply of bad will. How else should we explain their complete lack of grasp of the Catholic position. Whether they agree or not they understand well that one who says sin is good and permissible is not holding Catholic doctrine. Saying someone who actually BELIEVES Catholic teaching is an extremely “Conservative” Catholic and such like makes my blood boil.

This is the most sane post on the topic.

The Pope is not against artificial contraception and homosexual marriage because he is conservative, but because he is the Roman Pontiff and the Vicar of Christ on earth.

He also backs the USCCB position on immigration reform and other church doctrines on social issues. What does that make him? .

I agree–orthodox is a more appropriate term rather than conservative—I also, agree that The Holy Spirit works through the Cardinals during the conclave to choose the appropriate successor to St. Peter–but with that said, would you rather have the whole College of Cardinals (the possible future Pope) people like Cardinal Ratzinger and Cardinal Dolan or the recently retired Arch-Bishop of Los Angeles? I think it is clear what Pope Benedict XVI is doing—He is attempting to have like minded princes of The Church, that upon his death, whoever is chosen to be the next pontiff, will guide The Church in the right direction.
Very. From his lips to God’s ears.
You’re both forgetting one important point. The Cardinals elect the pope, but they can choose any baptized Catholic male, he need not be a cardinal. Celestine was not a cleric. He was a brother. There is at least one other brother who was elected pope and several who were diocesan bishops. Also, not all of the cardinals are bishops, but all of them get to vote and any of them can be elected.

In this age of surprises where we’ve had one 33-day pope, one Pole and one German, anything is possible at the next election.

Fraternally,

Br. JR, FFV 🙂

Once again, the Catholic Church must save Protestantism from itself.

They who permitted their own congregations to use contraception, and taught that it was not a sin to do so, and those who council that abortion is not always murder, and who ordain homosexual priests and Bishops - they are the ones who caused this whole problem with the HHS mandate. They are the ones who caused the whole need for their self proclaimed “Spiritual war” to preserve religious liberty.
Couldn’t agree more. The first anti-contraception legislation in this country was introduced by Protestants, their moral compass seems to follow society’s Overton window.
Although, I think if we had more Catholic politicians that actually practiced the faith they profess, we wouldn’t be as far down the road as we are now…

Roman Catholics, in general, are under attack in modern society. Just witness how trendy an issue same sex marriage has become. It’s becoming like the “Hula Hoop” of our age:mad:
Here in Australia it has become the latest rage with all the celebrities getting involved.
Orthodox (as in traditional) Catholic is the only type of Roman Catholic.
Isn’t the term “liberal Catholic” a contradiction in terms?
Catholic is Catholic is Catholic…open your heart and your mind and give up being devicive.

Catholic is one who if orthodox to the Traditions and morals of the Church, not one who chooses what they want to follow.

ALL of LA City and County are within the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. So are the entire counties of Santa Barbara and Ventura.

Christ Cathedral is located in Garden Grove, CA and not Orange. The current cathedral is in Santa Ana. All three are in Orange County however.

The Protestant Churches permitted contraception and abortion in the first place, and now they hide behind the Holy Father’s cassock when religious liberty is threatened, cheering about how conservative the Pope is and that the Bishops will be the saviors of the world. Now Catholicism is left to defeat the HHS mandate, and when we do so, the Protestant Churches will cheer that it is a victory for the first ammendment and for religious freedom.

But guess what?

They didn’t listen to the Bishops and the Holy Father when the Anglican Church began teaching that contraception was not a sin in 1930. They didn’t listen to the Bishops and the Holy Father when Humanae Vitae came out in 1968. They didn’t listen to the Bishops and the Holy Father when abortion was legalized in the United States in 1970. And they will not listen after this fight is over, when the Holy Catholic Church says again, “Abortion is murder and contraception is a sin.” They will go right back to teaching their congregations that it is OK to get vasecomies and that dismembering infants and sucking their body parts into jars is not a grave evil.

They won’t listen, and they won’t repent, and they won’t admit that the Holy Father and the Holy Catholic Church was right all along, because it is not about religious liberty, but about sin and the fact that their congregations are being lied to.

I really have to disagree with these statements. The Catholic Church is the ark of salvation in the world. She is the one true Church founded by Jesus Christ and her mission is to bring the saving message of the Gospel to the world. If that message isn’t out there, if it has been obscured by the false gospel of other religions, then the Catholic church has no one to blame but herself. We have not been doing the job we have been called to do. This whole Fortnight of Freedom thing really bugged me because the Bishops talked about religious freedom, but they never addressed the issues, such as contraception, abortion and homosexuality. Talk about freedom all you want, but if you don’t address the evil in our society, just how many souls are you going to save? When Humanae Vitae was given to the world, thousands of priests and far too many bishops did not support it, some gonig so far as to say that people were allowed to disagree with it. Then we wonder why 98% of all Catholic women have used contraception at one or another? Why did the head of a Rosary Society tell me that people can’t be blamed for using artificial contraception? We can’t blame the Protestants for that.

When we stand before Christ and he asks why the saving message of the Gospel was not forcefully presented to the world, we won’t be able to point the finger at other religions and say it was their fault. As goes the Catholic Church, the ark of Salvation, so goes the world. Is it just coincidence that when the church was strong and respected in society that morality was strong?

God bless the Holy Father as he attempts to stand strong in the face of all opposition, much of which comes from within from members of the Catholic Church.

Glenn Beck is actually Mormon, so pray for his soul that he can find his way out of that mental maze. :signofcross:
Raised Catholic, now Mormon, probably because it is how he found his way out of alcoholism. Hence the term come HOME. Come back to your roots.

Do you mean orthodox like the Pope Pius X society or something different?
Orthodox meaning believing and doing one’s best to faithfully follow what Christ, His Holy Catholic Church, and Holy Scripture teach us. Never picking and choosing, but believing and accepting it all…doing this of course requires study, effort, and real commitment to cooperating with the Holy Spirit.

Yes, “liberal Catholic” does not exist. God is God, not us.

“Trendy”? I hate that word. It is only “trendy” for those who are deceived or who have been lied to. There’s a difference. There are those who think it’s OK mainly because they are surrounded by those who say things like, “What’s the big deal?” Those who are lied to are told that gay marriage is exactly like heterosexual marriage.

Peace,
Ed

I see your point! But as a conservative on the political front, I’ve always been dismayed at how much political support Catholics have given the far-left. I understand that Social Justice issues are very compelling, but I think in the last 30 years, Democrats on a national level have become something that your average working man would no longer recognize if he looked at it afresh.

I agree completely. It seems we are missing the chance to instruct the nation, and cafeteria catholics, **WHY** this HHS mandate is wrong besides that it is unconstitutional.

As for Glenn Beck, yes, please come home and lets all pray for his reversion. As for the "Traditional"/"Orthodox"/"Conservative" labels, we on this forum know where the difference lies but that difference would be lost among *most* of the non-catholic Christian viewers. So, is it really worth harping about?

Who is to say that the Holy Spirit is not working through Pope Benedict XVI to confirm Orthodox cardinals? (I heard speculation on another site that one possible choice would be Cardinal Burke, he would be the 1st from this hemisphere..and awesome!)

Lastly, we need to support Pope Benedict XVI as much as possible.
