Pope Francis has declared a special Jubilee Year, a Year of Mercy. The Year of Mercy will begin on December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception, and continue through November 20, …

I will prepare to make this a year of retreat dedicated to merciful acts and sacrifice to overcome the barriers of pride and other human weaknesses in my immediate relationships and environment. I don’t want to miss a single opportunity that Pope Francis is bringing us to grow in the faith.

We have to live mercifully to understand Gods mercy. Too often we hear mercy described as conditional favour and grace. ie. I’ll show you mercy if you demonstrate you deserve it… and this attitude has to be overcome… especially in family and close relationships.

Wonderful news and something to look forward to!

We all need mercy and need to be merciful.

This will be something to look forward to.

One must wonder, does this call for a Year of Mercy coincide with the coming Fall Synod?

I hope it’s an opportunity for the Church to clarify to it’s flock what Mercy really means.

What does Mercy really mean to you? It is a beautiful word - in English or Latin or any language for that matter.

I find this quite interesting.
  1. Jesus told St. Faustina to prepare the world for His Final Coming (and that it is the sign of the end times).
  2. Jesus told St. Faustina to tell souls about His great mercy, because the day of mercy will be followed by a day of His justice.
  3. Jesus told St. Faustina that the Church must institute a feast day for His Mercy.
  4. Saint John Paul II instituted Divine Mercy Sunday.
  5. Now, Pope Francis declares a Year of Mercy.
Is is possible that the day of mercy is coming to a close and that our wonderful Holy Father is trying to attract many souls to the Lord’s Divine Mercy?

It seems to me that Pope Francis has made mercy a central focus in his pontificate, seemingly in an attempt to draw more people onto the Ark of the Holy Church.

Only God knows the answer to that question, but you make many good points!

The second paragraph of the article gives the official dates for the Jubilee Year – it begins on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception.

Let’s not forget Shakespeare. Didn’t everyone have to memorize this?
The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
'Tis mightiest in the mightiest. It becomes
The thronèd monarch better than his crown.
His scepter shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings,
But mercy is above this sceptered sway.
It is enthronèd in the hearts of kings.
It is an attribute to God himself.
