So if I’m reading you correctly, Joe Tobin is going to be the new archbishop of Indianapolis?

Apparently he was critical of the way the CDF dealt with the LCWR.

So does this mean that the Pope is sending him back to the States in order to be a conciliator and bridge builder?

The article really doesn’t say. Maybe he felt the report was too easy on some of those orders? It just says he wasn’t happy with it.

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Archbishop Joseph William Tobin, the Secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated life, as the new head of the archdiocese of Indianapolis in the USA.

While the move is likely to be warmly welcomed by the 246,000 strong Catholic community in Indianapolis archdiocese, it will certainly sadden many of the almost one million men and women religious, not only in the USA but also elsewhere in the world, sources in religious orders told Vatican Insider earlier this week.

Tobin flew to Indianapolis on Monday 15 October. Rumors predicting this change began circulating soon after the publication in April 2012 of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s highly critical report of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious in the United States. At the time, it was widely known that Tobin was not happy with that report and, it seems, had not been consulted on it.

Even taking that into account, his reassignment is nevertheless surprising given that just over two years ago – on 2 August 2010 - Pope Benedict had personally chosen Tobin to be Secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life. He had come to know and appreciate Tobin while he was Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith and the American was head of the Redemptorist Order (1997-2009), and hand-picked him for that post.

Born in Detroit, Michigan, Tobin did under-graduate and post-graduate studies in the USA, before working in parish ministry in Detroit and Chicago for 12 years and serving another 6 years as Episcopal-vicar for the archdiocese of Detroit.

He came to Rome in 1991 following his election as Consultor-General of the Redemptorist order, and in 1997 was chosen to head that order, a post he held for the next 12 years.

While in Rome, Tobin served as vice-president of the Union of Superior’s General and was appointed a member of the council for relations between that body and the Vatican Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and the Societies of Apostolic Life – to which he was later named as its second in command.

In that Vatican congregation Tobin worked well and closely with the Brazilian Cardinal Jao Braz de Aziz in overseeing the life and work of almost one million consecrated men and women worldwide, and brought the weight of his broad experience as a pastor and head of a religious order to that important task. He will now take all that rich experience to his new role as archbishop in Indianapolis, and is also expected to play a significant role in the Catholic Bishops Conference of the USA.
 
Interesting. I get the feeling that those Vatican offices (head of the Congregation of this and that) are usually in place for many years. I suppose it would really be unseemly curiosity on my part to want to know all the details. :o

We did not have an Archbishop. We had an “apostolic administrator”. There is not a word on the personal webpage of Bishop Coyne, nor on his FB page, nor on the diocesan website about this appointment. So they are keeping it quiet, at least for now.
 
It appears that Archbishop Tobin, like the other appointments by our great Pope Benedict XVI, is very orthodox and socially conservative. Deo gratias, and our pope shows his deep wisdom in elevating the archbishops of Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Minnesota, and now Indianapolis. We need leaders such as these in the Church, leaders who will stand firm against those who condone wholesale slaughter of the unborn or who would defile the Holy Sacrament of Marriage!
 
Great news!

I will miss Bishop Coyne. He’s been great in keeping things running in our archdiocese. He posts daily on his Facebook page with thoughts on daily readings. He was sure that he would not be assigned the diocesan chair, being a junior bishop, but I’m sure he will be sought after in due course. Great man.

As for Archbishop Tobin…he’s got quite the resume and the Pontiff’s approval. I look forward to his stewardship here in Indianapolis.
 
Bishop Tobin, during the past few years anyway, has been an outspoken proponent of the Church’s position on the number of social and political issues. His name has cropped up in these forums a handful of times, and a quick Google search shows many more occasions which didn’t get mention in the News forums.
 
The official announcement of Archbishop-elect Tobin’s appointment is not scheduled until Thursday.
Relayed earlier today by the Vatican service of the Italian daily La Stampa, Whispers ops in the US and Rome confirmed the move, which is tipped to be announced on Thursday. While talk of the famously gregarious cleric’s departure for Indy had buzzed around the Italian press over recent days, Tobin’s potential homecoming to the Indiana post was first reported by The Tablet’s Robert Mickens in his “Letter from Rome” for the London-based weekly’s 2 June edition.

I know you did not intend to leave anyone out, but I would like to add the excellent bishop of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau in Missouri, James Johnston, also appointed by Pope Benedict.🙂
 
We now have 2 Bishops in the US with the last name of Tobin.

The Most Rev. Thomas Joseph Tobin, Bishop of Providence, RI, and of course, the Most Rev. Joseph William Tobin, the new Archbishop of Indianapolis.
 
Today it became official 🙂

This morning the Holy See announced the decision of Pope Benedict XVI to name Archbishop Joseph William Tobin, C.SS.R. as the new Archbishop of Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.

The diocese had been vacant since the resignation of Archbishop Daniel Mark Buechlein, O.S.B. in September 2011.

Archbishop Tobin had been serving as Secretary of the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.
