In a highly significant move, Pope Francis has appointed Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley as a full (board) member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (C.D.F.).

The Vatican made the announcement at noon on Saturday, Jan. 14, and highlighted the fact that the cardinal-archbishop of Boston also serves as president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors that Francis instituted in 2014.

The cardinal’s appointment as a member of the C.D.F. means there is now a direct link between the commission and C.D.F., which has the central role is dealing with all cases of the abuse of minors by clergy, as well as bishops who are negligent in their duty to protect children. It ensures that the C.D.F. and the commission will be able to work more closely together, while fully respecting their distinct and very different roles.

Cadinal O’Malley is a wonderful Bishop who is humble and compassionate.

Best Bishop Boston has ever had.

Bolded and underline is mine.

That’s quite a statement considering that Richard Chushing was also once Cardinal Archbishop of Boston. He was no slouch, either.

You mean Cardinal Cushing ?

Not allowed to say negative things about clergy in here.

I don’t think he was saying anything negative. I think he was saying that Richard Cardinal Cushing was a pretty great archbishop as well. Plus Cardinal Cushing served as archbishop for 26 years (plus an additional 5 as the auxiliary bishop of Boston before that, and several years as a priest there); Cardinal O’Malley has only been there 13 so far. Both great archbishops, in fact. Perhaps if the poster was a young man (since Cardinal Cushing retired nearly 47 years ago) he would have only had in memory Cardinal Law, for example, and not realized Boston’s rich heritage otherwise.

On a personal note, Cardinal Sean O’Malley sent my father-in-law, Sean O’Malley a lovely letter with his signature and seal on Papa’s 90th birthday. So kind.

🙂

Ah, gotcha. 😃

Yes, I agree.
Yes, I was NOT saying anything negative about Cardinal Cushing.

He oversaw unparalleled growth in the Archdiocese. I think that whatever shortcomings he may have had, he did alot of good as well.

I am relatively young, and don’t have any real recollection of anyone else besides Cardinal Law (although I remember Cardinal Mediros’s funeral being broadcast on WBZ radio). Cardinal O’Malley may go down as one of the greats, and through no fault of his own inherited a brutal situation in Boston.

The Church in Boston and Massachusetts no longer has the power it once had, and Boston is at the center of the liberal/secular world that despises the Church. The two largest religious groups in Massachusetts are:
Code:
 1. Catholics
 2. "Former" or "raised" Catholics that no longer practice.
I pray that with the help of the Holy Spirit, Pope Francis and Cardinal O’Malley can reverse the trend and that we see growth once again.

All I’ll say is Cardinal Cushing was very good friends with Joe Kennedy.

Do the math yourselves.

I am very happy for the Church in the United States, with prelates like Cardinal O’Malley, Cardinal Cupich, Cardinal Tobin, and various bishops that the Holy Father is installing…all to help provide invigorating leadership to the Church in America…it is a time of great renewal for the Church, for which we thank God and the Pope with which He has blessed the Universal Church.
