Pope appoints German bishop as new head of doctrinal office [CNAU]

Hans Kung is mad, saying the appointment is disastrous. But the trads are also up in arms, accusing him of heresy re: the Eucharist and the perpetual virginity of Mary. I’ve read the supposed offending quote on Mary and it’s really not that controversial, but I don’t know my sacramentology well enough to comment on his opinions re: the Eucharist. On the plus side he seems to have cracked down on dissenters in Germany.

So, hard to say. I worry this is another mealy-mouthed, gray-faced organization man a la Card. Wuerl.
 
Evidently Muller has also had some extremely strained and unpleasant interactions with the SSPX, which makes me wonder why the Holy Father put him in charge of the commission that will be negotiating with them if he is serious about making a legacy out of healing this breach.

This appointment is in tandem with the appointment of Archbishop Di Noia, so I don’t know how many conclusions one can draw as to the fate of the SSPX dicsussion.

On the other hand, there are eight total regularly-occurring canonically regular EF Masses in his diocese. Of course he can’t prevent the EF from being celebrated, but it such a number likely has at least his blessing. Even for our standards that is quite a lot.

Some are freaking out and saying he denies the perpetual virginity of Mary. Personally I don’t see that. He doesn’t deny her virginity. He just said that it might not have been that Jesus “beamed out” of her; that is, he said it is entirely possible that a normal vaginal birth occurred. As far as I can tell, this does not deny any dogma or doctrine.

I do not like this Lib. Th. stuff, but overall I am ignoring that. Kung is outraged and that seems like a good enough sign to me.

Furthermore, Fr. Z worked for the Pont. Comm. Ecclesia Dei. He expressed confidence that the Prefect of the Holy Office does not do a lot past making sure the trains run on time. I don’t really know, but Fr. Z usually calls these mundane sorts of things for what they are.

Overall I am not concerned.
