Hooray Pope Benedict! Let Canadians know the value of religion. We need our Catholic politicians to wake up to moral reality! 👍

VATICAN CITY Pope Benedict XVI hit out Friday at Canada’s laws allowing same sex marriage and abortion, saying they result from Catholic politicians ignoring the values of their religion.
“In the name of ‘tolerance’ your country has had to endure the folly of the redefinition of spouse, and in the name of ‘freedom of choice’ it is confronted with the daily destruction of unborn children,” the pope told a group of bishops from Ontario.

Such laws, he said, are the result of “the exclusion of God from the public sphere.” He lamented that Catholic politicians yielded to “ephemeral social trends and the spurious demands of opinion polls.”

Benedict has made the defense of traditional family values a major goal of his papacy, speaking out often on the issue. During a trip to Spain in July he challenged that country’s Socialist government for instituting liberal reforms such as gay marriage and fast-track divorce.

Same-sex marriage was recognized by Canada’s parliament last year. New Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper has pledged to hold a vote in the House of Commons later this year to determine whether the issue should be revisited

Excellent points His Holiness made. But who will listen I wonder?

and it doesn’t work. I vaguely remember hearing some lesbian wanted a divorce but couldnt get one because law said same-sex couples couldnt, or someting along those lines. And how long after the marriage was this? Not even a year. Yeah, you love eachother so much so we’ll let you marry. 8 months of marriage isn’t love.

Congratulations to the Pope for giving it to our country and telling us what we need to know.

Great point, when the gov’t gets a taste for the divorce issues this is going to bring up, they will realize the Hell they have created for themselves. It’s almost comic watching governments go wild for same-sex marriage like Willie E. Coyote building one his ridiculous contraptions to catch the Road Runner.

Good observation.

To be fair in the debate, its not like there havent been plenty of heterosexual marriages that break up within months…and I’m sure there are several homosexual relationships that last longer than that. It’s not really a point worth bringing into the debate.

I love the title of the thread…“Pope assails…” I don’t think you can call anything he said “assailing”. What he did was offer a cogent defense of church teaching while again pushing forward the positivity of living as a Catholic in the world.

You can defend the teaching without assailing people.

Tell that to the gay community in Canada. They get up in arms everytime a priest gives the Church’s teachings on gay marriage as if we were declaring war on them.

Former MP Pat O’Brien who resigned from the Liberal Party during the gay marriage issue, and a parishoner at my old church, had this to say,

“A morality of convenience is not much of a morality and if you’re going to leave behind your Catholic Christian beliefs and principles because you walk into a legislative chamber, to me that would be a morality of convenience. Politicians who say they are practising Catholics and practising Christians will hopefully very carefully consider the words of the Holy Father.”

He is one of the few Canadian politicians who stand up for what they believe in.

I’m sure they do…

BUT…we have a responsibility to live that injunction “Christ was spoken evil of but spoke no evil in return”

Our job as Catholics is to help people see Jesus as the sheepgate that leads them to a greater place.

I have gay friends, and we don’t agree often on the marriage issue…but we can talk about it in a rationale way without resorting to histronics.

Yes…we have folks on both sides of the issue with are quite virtolic.

But, I think we are going to get farther in growing the church by doing what B16 has said about offering a “positive option”.

Yeah, that’s the latest craze 😃 . The governments are not fashionable if they don’t … umm… bend to this new trend.

I would really like to sit down with Martin, Cretien and the likes and see how they can justify leaving their faith out of the Commons…last I checked Catholicism isn’t a hobby, its WHO you are, it defines you…just ask that lady who wrote Habit of Being who Weigel wrote about in the first chapter of Letters of a Young Catholic (Forgot her name)

BTW, does anyone have video of Benedict’s speech?

Probably those in the Canadian Government, but not to agree with him. They will probably use it to persecute the Church further for “hate speech”

Quite true. The Church cannot even denounce gay marriage without getting in trouble. Apparently objecting to gay marriage is a hate crime against gays, objecting to abortion is a hate crime against women, and if this continues soon we will be commiting hate crimes against atheists for saying God exists.

Like I say, the Canadian government doesn’t recognize abortion as a basic violation of human rights. And doesn’t think that gay unions are sinful.

I work on a small local government body, and for me, it comes down to what is good for my constituents. When the matter is sexual, such as about gay marriage (which has never come up), or domestic benefits for the unmarried, I come down on the side of who am I to judge. Not all my constituents choose to follow a strict form of religion which frowns on these sorts of things where there really is no harm being done between the parties. It is such a different matter from fraud where there is a victim.

But, following the brouhaha about Kerry, I did convert from Catholicism so that I didn’t have to worry about scandalizing anyone.

Exactly, which in this case is to admonish in charity to live in accordance with the Church’s teaching on sexuality.

In Christ,
Irenaeus
