Exactly, which in this case is to admonish in charity to live in accordance with the Church’s teaching on sexuality.

In Christ,
Irenaeus
I would suggest one may want to admonish after they’ve recognized the positive gifts someone brings to the church…something that we far too often fail to do.

That is not what ‘positive option’ means. Just imagine… we don’t mind that your are openly having an affair with the church organist; after all, the positive gifts that you bring to the church needs to be recognized.

Like I say, the Canadian government doesn’t recognize abortion as a basic violation of human rights. And doesn’t think that gay unions are sinful.
I’m pretty sure Stephen Harper thinks both those things are sinful. And he’s not even Catholic! He’s a better moral leader than Paul Martin or Jean Chretien; two former Catholic PM’s who should both be excommunicated.

Not at all what I mean…

I simply mean start at the positive and move to the teaching and ‘admonishment’.

Every member of the church has an earthly weakness, our job is to help each other massage out those kinks and live together as Catholics. That’s hard to do when the starting point is “Sinner! Haven’t you read the catechism”.

Engage culture…don’t run from it.

By “engage culture” you don’t by any chance mean to embrace homosexual marriages, do you?

No, I don’t mean ‘embrace’, but I don’t think we can ignore that they are happening and just hope that if we hit people over the head with the cathecism that somehow everything will be better in the morning

As an aside, hasn’t there been some rather disturbing uses of the “anti-hate speach” laws in Canada to attempt to muzzle any teaching about the moral problems with acting on a homosexual sexual inclination?

Yeah. I saw on the news the other night that the the School Board has hired two gay men to go through all the public text books and neutralize all language that is in favour of hetorosexuality. Looks like they want to force their gay agenda on all our innocent children.

As parents, we have our work cut out for us.

So just what are you suggesting?

Yes, I believe it started with an issue with the Catholic Church here. The gay community said that the Church was wrong to denounce gay marriage and relationships, so to do so in public was being “intolerant” and “unaccepting” of the gay community. They went after the Bishop of Calgary who basicaly said that the Church would be tolerant of gays, but not accepting. The government got involved, and now there is a movement (I’m not sure if it is a law yet, but I’m sure it will be a hot-topic when parliament reopens in October) that denouncing gay marriage is hate-speech against gays, denouncing abortion is hate-speech against women, ect. (but wouldnt believing in God be discrimminating against atheists?).

I wonder, would the Pope be arrested for a ‘hate crime’ if he visited Canada and dared to pronounce the Catholic position on gay marriage? How far into the ridiculous do Canadian lawmakers want to go?

As a Head-of-State, His Holiness has diplomatic immunity. He cannot be arrested by another country.

And that’s a good thing, because as John notes, some of our laws really favour the absurd. All in the name of equality, though.

They had this topic up for discussion on one of the local radio stations here in toronto (1010 am)

I couldn’t belive it when one woman called up and said, “I am a Catholic and I find what the pope said to be very offensive.”

Sadly that is the mindset of many catholics today. It is a result of preists and bishops not making it clear to the public that people who think like this do not have the right to call themselves catholics.

At some point the priests have to stand up and say, “if you don’t beleive in ALL church teachings then get out and leave the mass.” Don’t come back until you learn more about your faith and change your mindset.

In canada it is very common and quite acceptable for people to call themselves catholics and not agree with church teachings.
