Orogeny responds rather surprisingly and without giving any scientific explanations to support his radical judgement by accusing an Academy of Sciences of being wrong.
That is because I have already given you the scientific explanations on another forum and you ended up resorting to crying that I was being rude. You don’t care about the science as is made plain by the fact that you have ignored every real geologist that has responded to you in the past.
The conclusions Orogeny condemns form part of the article published by the Academy. My suggestion, that he checks with Berthault’s website where the published papers and references concerning his research are posted, was considered by Orogeny as “silly”
Well, Peter, I have checked that website and I have not changed my position. In fact, I even checked with Pierre Julien and that just strengthened my position. You do know who Dr. Julien is, don’t you Peter?
This approach from someone who claims to have scientific training is to say the least somewhat unexpected. Separating his scientific case for evolution from his polemic against instant creation is not difficult because when politely asked for details for the former he offers nothing.
What scientific training do you have, Peter? Hmm? Why don’t you make your own arguments rather than acting as a sock puppet for Berthault?
Why does he not address my original statement regarding the rejection of evolution by the infallible definition of creation by Lateran IV?
Why address that to this forum? Why not check in with the Pope, who must obviously disagree with you on your certain declaration that evolution has been infallibly rejected?

The July 2004 Vatican Statement on Creation and Evolution said:
64. Pope John Paul II stated some years ago that “new knowledge leads to the recognition of the theory of evolution as more than a hypothesis. It is indeed remarkable that this theory has been progressively accepted by researchers following a series of discoveries in various fields of knowledge”(“Message to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences on Evolution”1996). In continuity with previous twentieth century papal teaching on evolution (especially Pope Pius XII’s encyclical Humani Generis ), the Holy Father’s message acknowledges that there are “several theories of evolution” that are “materialist, reductionist and spiritualist” and thus incompatible with the Catholic faith. It follows that the message of Pope John Paul II cannot be read as a blanket approbation of all theories of evolution, including those of a neo-Darwinian provenance which explicitly deny to divine providence any truly causal role in the development of life in the universe. Mainly concerned with evolution as it “involves the question of man,” however, Pope John Paul’s message is specifically critical of materialistic theories of human origins and insists on the relevance of philosophy and theology for an adequate understanding of the “ontological leap” to the human which cannot be explained in purely scientific terms. The Church’s interest in evolution thus focuses particularly on “the conception of man” who, as created in the image of God, “cannot be subordinated as a pure means or instrument either to the species or to society.” As a person created in the image of God, he is capable of forming relationships of communion with other persons and with the triune God, as well as of exercising sovereignty and stewardship in the created universe. The implication of these remarks is that theories of evolution and of the origin of the universe possess particular theological interest when they touch on the doctrines of the creation ex nihilo and the creation of man in the image of God.

The entire paper can be found here:

So I guess, according to you, the present and most recent popes are teaching heresies since evolution has been infallibly denied?

second, the continuing peer-reviewed experiments in stratification empirically invalidating the multi-million year geological time-scale upon which evolution and the fossil record are based.
To date, there are no studies that do that. Do you have a study in mind that does?
Unfortunately, those Catholics that have opted for theistic evolution close their ears to opposition. They offer neither theological nor scientific arguments to justify their possition and like some thread participants resort to insinuations and “ad hominems” rather than scholarly arguments.
Theological arguments are not needed for science and you don’t understand the science. And unfortunately for you, Peter, I am just as Catholic as you are.
None-the-less, evolution has lost the day and, God willing, belief in the fullness of the Church’s teaching will soon be restored.
Well, if nothing else, Peter, you have at least admitted what I claimed long ago on another thread that you denied then - the entire reason you and Berthault came up with the silly conclusion that you have is that you want to support the bible. Sorry, but you have not succeeded. Thanks for at least admitting it, though.

One of the growing numbers of problems besetting radiometric dating is the initial supposition that the rocks are old.
One of the problems with trying to argue science with a YEC is that in many cases, and this is one, they either don’t know the actual science or they do but chose to ignore it and make false statements
That problem is removed by Berthault’s fundamental experiments on stratification which show that rocks do not need millions of years but form rapidly.
See, here is a problem I have with this. First, Berthault is not the first to do flume studies. Second, his experiments did not show what you are claiming. Look up cross-bedding and turbidity currents. Look for the earliest references to the two topics and see if they pre-date Berthault’s experiment.

Oh, and by the way, check Berthault’s experiment again and tell me where the carbonates, evaporites and shales were deposited.
The rock formations so far examined (the Tonto Group, Crimean Peninsular, Cambrian and Ordovician sandstones of St. Petersburg) follow the same pattern of rapid formation of strata. This is to be expected because the current (not taken into account by the original principles of stratigraphy) which transported the sedimentary particles moved relatively fast. The current’s actual velocity determined by paleohydraulic analysis of the rock has been shown to be several meters per second. Unless examples can be produced of formations forming otherwise, it can be said that strata tend to form rapidly.
The Tonto Group includes shales and limestones. Care to explain how they were deposited in a very rapid manner? Care to suggest a source for all of those sediments? Have you or Berthault ever visited any locations where those sediments are exposed (ie the Grand Canyon for the Tonto Group)?

<< Have you or Berthault ever visited any locations where those sediments are exposed (ie the Grand Canyon for the Tonto Group)? >>

No, Berthault very carefully conducted these flume experiments in his bathtub. All right, this creation-evolution thread has officially "jumped the shark" since Peter Wilders and “Kolbe Center” has joined it.

Overall, I think one of the problems with the anti-evolution crowd is that they don’t operate in a manner that I would consider to be scientific. One of the tools used by scientists in many fields is the concept of “weight of evidence.” This essentially means that by examining all of the relevant data, you’re likely to come up with contradictory evidence at times, but that the preponderance of evidence should be the basis for ultimate.

For something like the multiple theories of evolution, it’s impossible to test any one in a single hypothesis-driven experiment. As such, there’s a need to aggregate studies together and examine the weight of evidence.

What I feel lacking from the arguments against evolution is a simultaneous acknowledgment of science in several fields, including genetics, geology, paleontology, ecology, biophysics, statistics, and computer science (not to mention astronomy, mathematics, and physics). No one field provides sufficient evidence, but in ensemble, evidence based on physical forces at play in protein folding fits well with studies of genetic polymorphisms (e.g. cystic fibrosis) with different prevalences among human groups. The big bang, molecular evolution, carbon and dating mechanisms, complexity, and other theoretical bases for evolutionary thought don’t all exist separately.

As Catholics, we shouldn’t be afraid of physical explanations of the world. Even if, as string theorists posit, we can explain all the laws of physics easily, we run across a fundamental law of logic: Godel’s incompleteness theorem, which essentially says that no system of logic can proceed without bringing some assumptions to the table (e.g. Aristotelian logic). All the science in the world will never tell us why the universe seems to obey laws that are so very comprehensible to us, or why those laws are as they appear. Physics will never edge out the Creator!

As Catholics we shouldn’t be afraid of defending the meaning of Scripture or of allowing secular interpretations to cloud spiritual issues. If you believe evolution explains things, you also, as a Christian, need to go to Scripture as well.

Jesus Christ did not come to earth, tell us what he told us, and died for no reason. Our time here is temporary, and man’s knowledge is limited. A promotion of a mechanistic universe and a mechanistic humanity ignores the Holy Spirit of God. I don’t ignore science and spend a lot of time studying it, but Christians need to realize that God is a real person, is alive at this moment and is intimately involved in a relationship with the people he created.

God bless,
Ed

The only one claiming that we Catholics who accept evolution ignore scripture is you. I read scriptures every day (or almost every day). Why is that so hard for you to understand/accept?
Jesus Christ did not come to earth, tell us what he told us, and died for no reason. Our time here is temporary, and man’s knowledge is limited.
None of that has anything to do with evolution. Not one bit.
A promotion of a mechanistic universe and a mechanistic humanity ignores the Holy Spirit of God. I don’t ignore science and spend a lot of time studying it, but Christians need to realize that God is a real person, is alive at this moment and is intimately involved in a relationship with the people he created.
Have you really ignored those of us who are Catholics who defend science in these threads? If not, why would you even post such a statement?

I agree that the promotion of a mechanistic universe may well lead one toward an atheistic interpretation of the universe, which Catholics should avoid. However, acknowledgment of the preponderance of evidence as made known to us constitutes an acceptance of truth, and to me, it is an act of honesty and humility to allow well-supported evidence to inform my worldview.

Hello Tim,

What are you defending exactly? An unproven theory? A theory that says novel body parts just mutated themselves into existence?

And have you been ignoring my posts that clearly state evolution is not the whole of science?

God bless,
Ed

What are you defending exactly? An unproven theory? A theory that says novel body parts just mutated themselves into existence?
No, I am defending science, not your strawman. And I am defending my faith against those who imply that either I can’t be a Christian and accept evolution or that if I am, I don’t understand my faith properly.
And have you been ignoring my posts that clearly state evolution is not the whole of science?
No, but that is also a strawman in that no one claims that evolution is the whole of science.

My life is for Jesus Christ. Evolution or nonevolution will not determine if I get into Heaven. Do you see what I’m saying? I’m not challenging you about your faith, what I am saying is no ones’ faith, or commitment to Christ, should rest on evolution or no evolution. That’s all I’m pointing out.

Did God say we must believe in evolution in order to be saved? It reminds me of the verse in the Bible discussing the importance of circumcision.

A staunch defense of science is not my primary concern and it does concern me that a staunch defense of science seems more important, like circumcision, than salvation.

I’m not here to tell anyone what to do but I am here to point out that defending science is something unbelievers do as well, and that they need it to justify themselves. We don’t.

God bless,
Ed

Several people have made it clear that they are both Catholic and accept evolution. Our faith never rested on science and I don’t remember anyone claiming that it does. In fact, it can’t or else it would not be faith.
Did God say we must believe in evolution in order to be saved? It reminds me of the verse in the Bible discussing the importance of circumcision.
Who told you that He did? Who? I haven’t seen it in any threads on CAF or I would have challenged them myself.

Clearly you are not here to defend science, you are here to insist that your literal reading of Genesis is the only way it can be and to make clear that you reject those of us who have faith and accept science, specifically evolution and an old earth.
I’m not here to tell anyone what to do but I am here to point out that defending science is something unbelievers do as well, and that they need it to justify themselves. We don’t.
Really. If an unbeliever defends the position that the earth orbits the sun, do you reject that teaching? As far as justification goes, bull. Science is not faith.

When did I become the Pope and decree who gets rejected?

Sorry, you’re not making sense. If I disagree with the alleged evidence for evolution, that’s me talking about me. Apparently, there are a few here who agree with me. Get it? By you claiming that I am somehow ‘rejecting’ anyone is what you think. It’s not true. My statements are my statements. They are directed at all readers, not just you.

EXACTLY!!!

I don’t care if you don’t accept the science. I don’t care if others here agree with you. I don’t claim that acceptance of evolution is necessary for salvation. You have made it clear in numerous posts that you feel that the existence of a literal creation as found in Genesis 1 & 2 are necessary for salvation. You have also made it clear that if one accepts evolution and claims to be a christian, they have been deluded by athiests. So, either the christian is a)lying and isn’t really a christian or b) too stupid to understand what they believe. Those points you have made clear.
Evolution, even as presented on these forums, is placed above the Word of God and never as a complement to it.
Does that look familiar? How about this:
Evolution is the justification of the unbeliever. A Theory that claims to have evidence, but I question the interpretation of all of it. Science, at one time, was with God, now it is no miracles allowed. Those who think or want to accommodate with evolution ‘science’ and religion need to realize that evolution teaches human beings are animals and not created in the image and likeness of God. Evolution teaches that a series of fortuitous events brought us here, nothing else; God Not Needed. Again, God Not Needed. The Theory is judged complete with no outside God force involved.

How do you know that such methods of dating are reliable if it has been proven to be in error? Isn’t it an assumption to say that he has only proven rapid layering, rather then the possibility that the method used for dating is compromised?
Well, I don’t remember mentioning dating methods, but let’s deal with this anyway - it’s wrong to say that radiometric dating methods have been proven to be in error. On the contrary, different dating methods used on samples from the same deposit give very close results, and methods, such as isochron dating and concordia/discordia plots that have been developed over several decades are reliable and accurate, and avoid all the most obvious potential pitfalls.

I think you should try to understand what Berthault has actually done, and then you will see that his claims for his work are grossly overstated. He has demonstrated (experimentally in a large tank or flume with flowing water) some principles of sedimentation (sorting within sedimentation beds is very well known, for example the Bouma sequence of turbidites) that geologists have known about for decades, namely the simultaneous deposition of size sorted layers out of flow where there is flow rate shear. The consequences include prograde migration and lateral and vertical sorting. This represents some sedimentation conditions in flowing rivers. That’s it. No really, that’s all there is. It is on this flimsy basis that he claims to have revolutionised the whole of geology.

Well, of course, his claim to have undermined the basis of structural geology is absolute nonsense, not just because radiometric dating shows that it’s nonsense, but because it’s demonstrably nonsense on its own merits. Why? Well, for several reasons:
  1. His results are relevant to short term sedimentation in a river. They have no relevance to water borne sedimentation in low or zero flow lacustrine and marine environments
  2. They are also irrelevant to oil shale, varve, micritic laminae, and many other types of geological material
  3. They are irrelevant to volcanic tuffs, pumice, lapilli and other tephra, igneous rock and breccias formed by volcanic ash and lavas, or to beds of lava
  4. They are irrelevant to air borne or aeolian beds
  5. They are irrelevant to evaporites
  6. They are irrelevant to deposition in coal, bituminous and oil bearing sediment basins
  7. They are irrelevant to initial calcium carbonate deposition and diagenesis in chalks – and so on and so forth
  8. Furthermore, they have nothing to say about any case where lithification has taken place in an existing bed as overlying strata must then, by definition, be younger than underlying ones.
  9. In the many miles of depth of the geological column that is present in some places, many of these different processes can be found within the column, indicating that the environment in which the individual strata were deposited has changed over time. So for example we get fossiliferous lacustrine strata (bearing different index species) separated by volcanic tuff, evaporites or aeolian deposits and then marine strata overbedded by lava all in the same column.
As you can see, it is simply not remotely credible to do a few experiments on sedimentation in flowing water where the sediments are never consolidated, and claim that that invalidates the chronology that all working geologists conclude from the geological column as a whole (and have done since the 1700s). So, of course, the geological community utterly ignores Berthault’s grandiose claims to have revolutionised geology, not because he is a threat to them, but because the claims are so obviously vainglorious. None of his papers from the last seven years have been cited by any respectable geologist as far as I can tell, and they certainly would have been cited if he had a case.

I don’t expect Peter will engage with this, because, contrary to waht he claims, he won’t want to get stuck into the actual science.

You never did tell me what subject it is that you advise the Kolbe Centre on. Is it making videos? I suppose you are an expert like Bob Sungenis , who is listed by the Kolbe Centre as having expertise in relativity, cosmology and astronomy. a claim that is truly absurd. If that is what the Kolbe Centre means by expertise then no wonder it’s a laughing stock.

By the way, ignoring me won’t make me go away - as long as you post nonsense like your silly claims that Guy Berthault has single-handedly undermined 200 years of empirical and theoretical geology, I’ll be here to point out that you are talking absolute balderdash.

Before the crash on Catholic.Com when many postings were lost, I posted under the topic **Geocentric vs. Heliocentric Poll **. on July 26, 2006 the following:

I’ve been fortunate to have studied the history of science. This is the 21 century. Message 121 mentions Edwin Hubble. Galileo is mentioned at the beginning of PUBLICATIONS OF THE ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY OF THE PACIFIC, VOL. 59, AUGUST 1947, NO. 349, THE 200 INCH TELESCOPE AND SOME PROBLEMS IT MAY SOLVE* by Edwin Hubble, Mount Wilson Observatory (pages 153-167):

I noted that there wasn’t any mention of the word ether or aether within that document nor in any of the following articles written by Dr. Alec MacAndrew a physicist whom I stand by 100%:

Fortunately, we now live in the 21st century. We know the Big Bang isn’t a myth :

This is my 12th message to this topic and my final contribution. Mark aka trth-skr, it appears to me that you, Robert Sungenis, PhD, Robert Bennett, PhD, and Catholic Apologetics International will sell me a CD entitled “Galileo Was Wrong” (1) for $23 plus shipping which will explain to me the fraudulent claims made by world-renowned scientists such as Dr. Alec MacAndrew (hecd2). Please correct me if I am wrong.

Of course I didn’t buy the CD!!! And Mark aka trth-skr never replied.

I take advantage in responding to Rossum, of apologising to hecd2. It was because of the polemical nature of his first post, that I left it unanswered. His latest was in the same vein and lacking in the basic Catholic virtue of charity. However I intended to reply but his message disappeared from my computer. If he could send it again by email I will reply.

Being away from home and without broad-band there are problems…

Rossum writes:
Berthault’s result has nothing whatsoever to do with radioactive decay rates.
It was not his purpose to deal with them (albeit particularly knowledgeable on the subject), because the principles of stratigraphy were formulated from observation of the formation of rocks by sediments, not radiometry. It was these observations and their interpretation that were tested.
A very fast flash flood can move large rocks, a fast current cannot move large stones but not big boulders and so forth for slower currents moving smaller stones, sand and clay. Basically paleohydraulic analysis looks at the sizes of particles in old rocks and estimates the current strength. The size of the largest particle tells you roughly the strength of the current.
He is right in part of what you he says. If he studies Berthault’s work he will see that in his article published by the French Geological Society in 1993, he discussed flash floods. Regarding the movement of boulders this was covered in his 2004 article in “Lithological and Mineral Resources” which gave current velocities for transporting boulders. The object of his present experimental program in St. Petersburg is to determine current velocities to erode large rocks including boulders prior to their transport. These automatically include igneous and metamorphic rocks. Radiometric dating is of no value in this context.

Rossum continues:
There are sedimentary rocks with a very small particle size - and hence a very slow current.
Agreed, if there were only one current. If he studies the 2004 LMR article which is basically a paleohydraulic analysis (Berthault’s website refers), he will see that during the same transgression followed by a regression, changes in current vary from more than 6m/s down to virtually zero, and subsequently up again. At each stage sedimentary particles deposit according to size. In the same water movement sediments ranging from very large rocks to silt and clay will deposit as a function of the current velocity.

Well, of course Peter only has to look at the message list to see my posts which, like everyone else’s are held there archivally.

Nevertheless, I have sent my last post to him by e-mail as he requested. Let’s see how he responds. My expectation is that he will not want to get into detailed discusion of the objections I make, but we’ll see.

By the way, I see that Tim (Orogeny) has raised many of the same objections and Peter has so far failed to answer him. In fact, anyone who has any training (or even serious amateur interest) in geology will have the same obvious objections. And this is why Berthault claims for his work are so ridiculous.

Nor will he answer them because he can’t. I’ve played this game with him before. He will, in fact already has, begun his attempts to discredit me with posts like this:
Orogeny responds rather surprisingly and without giving any scientific explanations to support his radical judgement by accusing an Academy of Sciences of being wrong.
I have heard that almost verbatum from him before in another forum. Next, he will ask for my experimental evidence that shows Berthault is wrong. This will go on for a while until he finishes by claiming he can’t dialogue with me because I refuse to give any scientific argument when, in fact, he doesn’t understand the science to begin with.
