I agree…they are unnecessary and maybe even counterproductive to the Pope’s mission of reaching the masses. In fact, IMHO, some of them look downright silly.

I think tiaras and feathers and other “frou frou” things should be avoided in view of the fact that our new Holy Father is going to have a big “gay mafia” house cleaning thing going on as soon as he gets his feet on the floor.

All that fancy trapping was fine and good in the Medieval days when men dressed as flamboyantly as the women did and wore wigs and gowns and stuff, but it will just perpetuate the idea to non-Catholics that our religion is a one that attracts flaming queens.

Nowadays, if some supreme leader wears too many feathers, or furs, or elaborate headdresses, it just gathers snickers among the rest of the nations.

But hey, if the new Pope wants to wear a fancy costume, its certainly up to him and who am I to comment?

Though I agree that “some” few papal trappings of the past should not be restored, there is nothing feminine about any of it.

might pave the way for the restoration of the Tiara…although its largely irrelevant what Benedict just did, because the New Pope gains the same authority at the moment he is elected, meaning he has full leeway to change anything and everything he wants well before he is formally installed.

Although you are correct that the new pope could change the ceremony once he is elected, I doubt he will. It wouldn’t come off very well for one of the new pope’s first actions to be the undoing of one of his successor’s last actions.

That’s probably why Pope Benedict waited until now to make thes changes instead of making them right after he was elected 8 years ago.

Disagree… the Church has been VERY pastoral, arguably too much. Too much loosening, not enough binding.

She needs a monarch who will get things in line. So everyone knows who is boss. Right now the Pope is controlled by too many forces.
