Pope Benedict XVI, flying to Cuba for a historic visit, has said that Marxism was out of place in the contemporary world and urged Cubans to find “new models”.
His remarks on Friday were at least as forthright as any made by his predecessor, John Paul II, on a groundbreaking trip to the country 14 years ago. Answering a question about his visit to Cuba, which has remained a communist bastion for more than 50 years, the pope said: “Today it is evident that Marxist ideology in the way it was conceived no longer corresponds to reality.”
He told reporters accompanying him on the papal plane: “In this way we can no longer respond and build a society. New models must be found with patience and in a constructive way.”

In other news, American marxists continue to defend the failed model:

My mother lived in Cuba in the 80’s and it wasn’t working then either.

Wasn’t working for all the political prisoners tossed in jail either. Of course, there’s been some improvement. Now at least they do toss dissidents into jail. Fidel just lined them up against the wall for the firing squad.

I saw an article about this online. Its aggravating how many opponents of the Catholic Church were automatically saying the same about the Catholic Church, that it no longer applies to civilization. The pope can’t say anything present or nice without being attacked I am so often astonished at how people cannot just leave the pope alone and allow him to have his own thoughts and beliefs.

Tolerance is only a good thing if Catholics are exempt from it.

But as things stands today, it’s not likely that the pope or the Church will be left alone. Because the Church and the pope now pretty much represent the “counterculture” both in Cuba and in Western democracies.

i pray that the visit by Pope Benedict to both Mexico and Cuba will have a profound influnce on the peoples, catholics and governments of these countries. i hope it will strengthen the faith of the Catholic populations in both countries.

I do like being part of the Catholic counterculture sold out for Jesus. I admire what the pope is doing. He tried so hard and his zeal for the Lord shows!
:highprayer:

I was watching EWTN earlier and apparently Raoul Castro rushed up the stairs during Mass to meet Pope Benedict XVI. Does anyone have any idea why he would have done this? Is there any more information on this incident?

I think that we have simply accept that the Pope and the Church has lost favor in the Western World and will remain out of favor for some time to come. People will insult the Church wherever and whenever they can but like the image says: “keep calm and Catholic on.”

Yes, that’s true. It’s good to remember that the Church has outlasted hostile ideologies for 2000 years. Not only that, but the dismal failures of such recent anti-Catholic movements as Communism, secularism, and the sexual revolution, have become so apparent that they are inspiring a counter movement of the young toward the eternal truths.
