This is great news and hopefully will move some hearts away from the divisive stance taken lately.

Yep, in “traditionalist” circles I’m already seeing whispers of “coordinated effort” (from “the Left”) and “doesn’t sound like Pope Benedict’s style of speaking / writing”.
Some commentators on a certain popular blog often cited here on CAF are already opining that the Pope Emeritus is effectively a prisoner being manipulated by the Holy Father’s Leftist minions.
Sad.

I just checked that blog, and it’s absolutely appalling. How irresponsible of him to encourage this sort of nonsense.
Very glad I quit that site several years ago.

UPDATE news story from following source regarding Pope Benedict and the letter. It has been reported that a photo of the letter was doctored. This is frankly disturbing. Why would the Vatican have done that? Pope Benedict XVI “wrote that he cannot contribute a theological assessment of Francis as requested by Vigano because he has other projects to do.”
Some more from following article:
VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican admitted Thursday that it altered a photo sent to the media of a letter from retired Pope Benedict XVI about Pope Francis. The manipulation changed the meaning of the image in a way that violated photojournalist industry standards.
The Vatican’s communications office released the photo of the letter on Monday on the eve of Francis’ five-year anniversary. The letter was cited by Monsignor Dario Vigano, chief of communications, to rebut critics of Francis who question his theological and philosophical heft and say he represents a rupture from Benedict’s doctrine-minded papacy.

In the part of the letter that is legible in the photo, Benedict praised a new volume of books on the theology of Francis as evidence of the “foolish prejudice” of his critics. The book project, Benedict wrote, “helps to see the interior continuity between the two pontificates, with all the differences in style and temperament.”

The Vatican admitted Thursday that it blurred the two final lines of the first page where Benedict begins to explain that he didn’t actually read the books in question. He wrote that he cannot contribute a theological assessment of Francis as requested by Vigano because he has other projects to do.

Don’t know about anyone else but I got a virus warning from that site. Here is the story from the AP…

Most independent news media, including The Associated Press, follow strict standards that forbid digital manipulation of photos.

“No element should be digitally added to or subtracted from any photograph,” read the AP norms, which are considered to be the industry standard among news agencies.

Vigano heads the Vatican’s new Secretariat for Communications, which has brought all Vatican media under one umbrella in a bid to reduce costs and improve efficiency, part of Francis’ reform efforts. The office’s recent message for the church’s World Day of Social Communications denounced “fake news” as evil and urged media to seek the truth.

OK I was trying to give the Vatican the benefit of the doubt… in my earlier post I dismissed the talk of “conspiracy” from those more on the traditionalist side of the spectrum. But here we have a neutral source reporting that officials at the Vatican deliberately sought to manipulate the Pope Emeritus’ words to bolster support for the Pope? That’s pretty disturbing.

Weeellll, what else is new? Bizarre has become the new normal for the Vatican.

I’m just here enjoying my 🍿

Yes, I saw that too. I am not really surprised by it though, don’t know why. I just kind of watch it all unfold.

Resigned popes being manipulated for an agenda is straight out of the renaissance. Man, with all the intrigue and scandals, this papacy is like we’re going back to that era…they say history is cyclical and we had a decent run for a while prior, so I guess we were due…

It is not “fraudulent” that Pope Benedict mentioned “the interior continuity between the two pontificates, with all the differences in style and temperament.”

To accuse him of being manipulated is very disrespectful of him.

It seems like a foolish mistake on the part of the Vatican as they have to know the enemies of Pope Francis would latch onto this.
Latch on to it how? Who are these enemies of Pope Francis?

Oh, you can look at various “catholic” website and find the enemies of the Pope.
So Hyperbole then…Good to know!

Pope Francis doesn’t need outside enemies.

He has a staff that doctors photos.

Seems like you know exactly what I am talking about but, for reasons that aren’t clear to me, are acting like you don’t.
I know perfectly well what you are talking about, you judge anyone who doesn’t agree with our Holy Father as an enemy. I think you are wrong and you can’t produce any proof of your opinion.
