Pope Benedict lambasts some Francis critics

Well as the one who started this thread… I must say that this development is disappointing. The press office had no need to blur the last sentence, but took that step in some effort to add unnecessary weight to the Emeritus Pope’s comments… total self inflicted wound.

Benedict’s comments remain a strong reinforcement for Francis…but are ‘blurred’ by the unfortunate news that that the photo was altered… what a shame.

Man, with all the intrigue and scandals, this papacy is like we’re going back to that era…they say history is cyclical and we had a decent run for a while prior, so I guess we were due…
I don’t know… this papacy hasn’t endured anything close to the pedophilia scandal that taints the reign of JPII and PBXVI … a footnote and a blurred photo are peanuts in comparison.

The difference being that the pedo scandal mostly occurred decades before JPII or Bene. Really had nothing to do with their pontificate. The Vatican under the head of PF seems to be promoting confusion and subeterfuge. This blurred photo is a great example of this. PF no doubt is more than likely unaware what is going on in most cases but the buck stops at the top.

The pedo scandal peaked during JPII pontificate.
Right but the the majority of the offences happened decades before JPII was pope. he just happened to be the pope during the time when all the offences came to light. Was JPII the cause of this criminal acts? anyne in charge would have been faced with the same issues by no fault of there own.

Yes it is hard to miss your veiled judgement on how anyone who does not agree PF opinion are against the pope. the way you generalize all the different points of view are amusing!

I’m sure that you can intelligently tell the difference between criticism of the Pope and acting as an enemy of the Pope if you really choose to.
I have no problem discerning an enemy of the Pope and the Church. I am asking you to show me what you think the enemy of the Pop acts like. Can you do that? So far only innuendo and accusations with nothing to back it up!

I don’t need to do it. If you know the difference, then you know what I am talking about.
I do know the difference but I don’t think you do! Hence the reason why I wanted to see evidence if you know what your talking about or just making general accusations about other peoples character.

The link you provided in the op doesn’t work. Is the thread title the actual headline?

So in reality Pope Emeritus did no such thing as lambast Pope Francis’ critics.

Fake news lol. Yeah I thought news thread titles were supposed to reflect the actual headline that is linked to?

Anyway there is more to this story…
Even more comes about The Letter™: additional missing text

Vatican Reveals Full Text of Benedict XVI’s Letter to Msgr. Viganò The Vatican released on Saturday the full text of Benedict XVI's letter to Msgr. Vigano showing that two paragraphs were concealed. The Vatican said it had no intention to censor the letter but chose to leave out parts of it as the letter was confidential. The story as it developed.

Yep, in “traditionalist” circles I’m already seeing whispers of “coordinated effort” (from “the Left”) and “doesn’t sound like Pope Benedict’s style of speaking / writing”.
Some commentators on a certain popular blog often cited here on CAF are already opining that the Pope Emeritus is effectively a prisoner being manipulated by the Holy Father’s Leftist minions.
Sad.

BREAKING: Pope Benedict in his letter complained that the Vatican had chosen a “virulent,” ''anti-papist" theologian who attacked his teaching to celebrate the thought of Pope Francis. #lettergate." end tweet

No matter what happens, people on both fringes will take a strong, uncharitable stand. So what? The fact that someone who is paranoid may criticize legal abortion, for instance, does not therefore prove abortion is a minor problem, or that all people in the prolife movement are thus paranoid. Focus on the issue.

The reality is that there are many signs that people appointed high in Vatican, either full time or consultants, usually implicitly have promoted positions very much contrary to the Catholic Faith. Forces in the secular media hostile to the Catholic Faith have exploited this, with or without consent of those persons. This message, amplified by the media, undermines the Church’s witness to Catholic faithful and non Catholics alike.

Even if the Vatican states that a given person does not speak for the pope, or even if the person himself states this does not speak for the pope, that disclaimer is not getting communicated to the mass of people who get this message.

Don’t get distracted by the response of the fringes.

Vatican bows to pressure, releases retired pope’s letter
By NICOLE WINFIELD
Yesterday
VATICAN CITY (AP) — Stung by accusations of spreading “fake news,” the Vatican on Saturday released the complete letter by Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI about Pope Francis after coming under blistering criticism for selectively citing it in a press release and digitally manipulating a photograph of it.

The previously hidden part of the letter provides the full explanation why Benedict refused to write a commentary on a new Vatican-published compilation of books about Francis’ theological and philosophical background that was released to mark his fifth anniversary as pope.

In addition to saying he didn’t have time, Benedict noted that one of the authors involved in the project had launched “virulent,” ''anti-papist" attacks against his teaching and that of St. John Paul II. He said he was “surprised” the Vatican had chosen the theologian to be included in the 11-volume “The Theology of Pope Francis.”

“I’m certain you can understand why I’m declining,” Benedict wrote.

The Vatican’s Secretariat for Communications said Saturday it was releasing the full text of the letter due to the controversy over the “presumed manipulation” of information when the volume was launched Monday with great fanfare on the eve of Francis’ anniversary.

It said its decision to withhold part of the letter at the time was based on its desire for reserve, “not because of any desire to censor.”

The so-called “Lettergate” scandal has embarrassed the Vatican’s communications operations and fueled the growing chasm between supporters of Francis’ pastoral-focused papacy and conservatives who long for the doctrine-minded tenure of Benedict.

A Twitter hashtag #releasetheletter went viral among Catholic conservatives as the scandal widened.

The Secretariat for Communication, in particular, was accused of spreading “fake news” for having omitted key parts of Benedict’s letter and — as The Associated Press reported — digitally blurring a photograph of the document where Benedict started to explain why he wouldn’t comment on the book.

Photojournalism industry standards forbid such manipulation of a photo, especially if it alters the content and meaning of the image, as it did.

Many commentators noted the irony of accusations that the Vatican’s communications office was spreading “fake news,” since Francis dedicated his annual message for the church’s social communications day to fighting “fake news” and the distortion of information. Francis has frequently criticized journalists for only giving half of the story.

This incident is a major embarrassment for the current Vatican press office.

The real “incident” here is not the mishandling of the press release, but the Vatican mishandling of theology. There is a pattern of atrocious judgement in appointments. Don’t put all the blame on the messenger, though they deserve some blame.

Someone in that office should be fired. Not firing someone would give the terrible impression that the Holy See is just fine with this sort of unethical nonsense.

Someone should be fired, but the problem might be that the Pope either ordered the release of the doctored/incomplete letter himself, so firing someone who simply followed his orders would be hypocritical. Though he could still fire someone anyway; he has not shied away from firing people for no reason in the past.

My sincere hope is that this did not come down directly from Pope Francis.
