In another significant liturgical turn at the very top, B16 will celebrate tomorrow’s annual Sistine Chapel Mass for the Baptism of the Lord in the ad orientem stance – that is, facing away from the congregation and toward the cross that stands at the chapel’s back wall.

In an explanatory note from the Office for Papal Liturgical Celebrations picked up by the Italian wires, the papal MC Msgr Guido Marini announced that the Mass, to be conducted according to the post-Conciliar “Ordinary Use” approved by Paul VI, would employ the main altar of the Sistina. As a result, the note said, “at certain moments the Pope will have his shoulders [back] to the faithful and his gaze toward the Cross.”

But let’s not get too smug. Your parish is one in a million. Sadly, it does not in any way represent the norm. Most Catholics would consider Grotto to be “odd.”

I say this as an admirer of your parish.
 
The Vatican Radio announcer is too funny…" in a stark *break *with tradition Pope Benedict has decided to celebrate the Mass on the altar…"😃

Pity is wasn’t fully solemn though. No incense, no sung Gloria or Gospel or Preface or other prayers. I suppose it was in Italian because it was for the diocese. Though the Holy Father did start the Pater in Latin before switching to the choir’s Italian.

But nice to see the two acolytes with candles for the Communion
 
Very interesting. I look forward to future changes that may occur in the order of Mass. I just pray that all those bishops that complained about traditionalists needing to be obedient will “go and do likewise.” I do not believe we have seen the end to the pendelum swinging back.

That is true. I do wish they would make it the norm and bring the Altar Rail back. Both were some of the reasons I joined this parish. I do not even like to visit other parishes anymore.
 
They say that John Paul II opened our hearts to the Church, and that now Benedict XVI is filling them. God bless both of them.

This is great news. The only thing I dont like is Rocco getting a front page here, that guy is a low life. He got some Bishop to give him the MP and leaked the Motu Proprio on his blog before it was officially released.
