It makes sense. If you have a ring with a seal and you mar its face, you’ve destroyed it, because it no longer serves the wearer.

Thanks. That’s good to know. Yeah, I had the idea in my head of them smashing it to bits or something. :o What you have described makes much more sense.

Such a destruction really serves no purpose. It’s not even a public action. It’s not as if we could say that there is a tradition that is being taken away and we’re left with a gap.

I sometimes wonder if we’re insecure and grab on to customs that no longer serve their original purpose, just to know that there is something familiar out there, even if we never see it.
 
I went to mass today. We were told that Benedict’s name would not be used during the mass part. It made me sad, so I hope we get a new pope soon!
