I realize that Lutherans rely on God’s grace alone for salvation, as Catholics do. But the difference between a responsibility to be obedient and a necessity for obedience is still at issue, IMO-although it’s an issue that’s hopefully resolvable.Lutherans believe we are justified by grace alone through faith in Christ. We have no ability to save ourselves. But we do have a responsibilty to be obedient, and this includes our participation in our sanctification, doing good works, hearing the word and receiving the Eucharist and confession/Holy Absolution, all the time knowing it is by Christ’s work, and the Holy Spirit in us, that makes salvation possible.
