Pope Benedict XVI 'to resign'

I think John Paul II had a mission at the end about the sanctity of Life. Pope Benedict XVI is in a more normative situation and making a valid prudential judgement.

We have been extremely, extremely blessed that we have been given these two Popes who have nourished our spirituality with their leadership and writings. They have kept the Church both relevant and uncompromising in the defense of our faith.

I hope he continues to write.

God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, please grant us another great leader for our times. Amen.

God bless Pope Benedict, who really is a “holy” Holy Father. He is so wise, I’m sure God has directed him in his decision, and it will be what is best for the Church. Praying for him.

Is he ill? I mean beyond just old age? Very sad…

How will this effect the catholic world?
I’ve seen some of the secular coverage on the Internet and people commenting on the stories are making very rude comments about our Holy Father. To me just the fact of his advanced age is enough reason for him to resign. He is probably just not strong enough in body to take all the pressure of the job. I will miss him though.😦

Amen!

The pope is resigning due to ill health (according to what i have read) so my prayers go out to him for his health and for thanks for leading the biggest church in the World!

Just out of curiosity and for discussion sake,

Who do you think the next pope will be?
The Holy Spirit knows so I need not guess or speculate - I have full faith in the process.

Let us all pray for our next Holy Father.

Maybe that’s why there hasn’t been any Canonisation news for John Paul II – Benedict wants to let the next Pope to have the privilege of doing it.

They already have miracles to choose from, I’m sure.

He has been looking frailer in recent times. I would imagine that, as with the death of JP2 and the end of the reigns of every previous Pope, a successor will be elected and the Catholic world will more or less keep on turning.

Oh they tend to do that pretty much every time he makes news anyway - I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Jesus said his followers would be hated by the world.

I’m kind of sad that Pope Benedict will be resigning right in the middle of Lent. But I also respect him a lot for making the hard choice to resign due to “advanced age.” I think it takes a lot of courage to do that. I think the Pope and the Church definitely need our prayers right now more than ever.

I’m also wondering who will become the new Pope. Do you think they will pick someone younger this time?

Does the Church not need a very strong leader to stand against the world’s current of affairs?
One of his level, at least?
Does it mean we are going to get a better one!
Ooh! The future of the Church is not clear to me as CHANGE may give birth to whatever complexes compared to the previous!!!

By all outward appearances he looks to be in excellent shape for an 85 year old man who has been working 16 hour days, 7 days a week. They talk about how presidents age twice as fast in office and the Papacy is every bit as demanding time and travel wise.

He probably feels this is an especially important time for the Church and it can’t wait another 5 or even 10 years (modern medicine) for someone young and energetic to effectively fight the enemies of the church and shepherd the flock.

I think this was a very selfless, strategic move made for the good of the Church and when I pray for the intentions of the new Pope I’ll be spending extra time praying for our retired pope.

Absolutely.

Expect someone in his 60s.

They typically alternate between younger and older Popes.

Ooh, as an Australian I would dearly love to see our own Cardinal George Pell elected. He can be quite feisty and funny as a speaker, plus he is fond of wearing his Australian Rules Football supporters scarf 🙂

I wonder how soon conclave will begin? There’s no 9 days mourning or funeral mass to prevent a quick start to conclave, although it will obviously require preparation and such.

And I do realize that this is a very serious topic, but while thinking about the conclave timeline, I couldn’t help find it slightly humorous that the pope effectively put in his two week notice today. How very practical and German of him.

He would be a nice breath of fresh air.

Personally I go for Schonborn.
