And the report you heard on NPR advanced an argument (i.e., an assertion) – that the next Pope should come from Latin America, since 42% of Catholics live there. Calm down, CC – I’m not saying that you’re argumentative, or that you agree with their line of thought: just that this notion is the same assertion that led to the controversy of whether the Church should be led by Rome or Constantinople… 😉
Gorgias,

NPR had a segment on this issue. I don’t recall the entire dialogue. There were African, Latino and who knows who else. All I did was recall the 42% offered by the Latin American person they interviewed. It is not an argument. It is an interview with someone. It is an interview with a bunch of different people offering opinions. I listen to the news. I reported what I heard. I am rolling my eyes right now not understanding any of this nonsense over pointing out what I heard. I have no stake in any of this news…I just pointed out what I heard.

I later posted, if you look back…
This is thoughtful. I listened to NPR about this and the plea from Latin America is that 42% of the Catholics in the world are in Latin America and Latin America sees this as indicative of the need for a Latin American Pope. A black Pope would serve the needs of the Church. In consideration that we see many looking at different issues color is not the only issue.
Perhaps a Pope from Finland, as we have seen Lutherans from Finland posting here touting thier majority religion.
Perhaps a Pope from Ireland as the Irish have been left out of the mix and Lord knows they suffered as much as anybody and that suffering continues.
Perhaps a Pope from England to recognize and magnify the split of Henry VIII
There are many scenarious that make sense however the Holy Spirit will guide and give us the next Pope and then we will be left to wonder why.
and to answer you I stated…
I am not stating an argument. I am stating a fact. I heard this on NPR. I also saw on EWTN, if you read my post above.
I have no argument one way or the other. I just added information to the discussion. In my opinion there are over a billion Catholics in the world. The next Pope will be selected from somewhere in the world. This you cannot argue.
You seem to have some vested interest in argument over this issue…I do not.🙂

I pray that the Holy Soirit will guide the Cardinals to give us the Pope that the world needs now.

Or perhaps a black or mestizo Pope. If Popes shouldn’t be picked based upon race or ethnicity (Italians) then they don’t always need to be white.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out a black Pope from Africa or even a white Spanish or Portuguese Pope from Latin America would reinvigorate the Church globally.

Or any non-white Pope like an Arab or Southeast or East Asian. Maybe an Amerindian with long black hair named Geronimo.

It’s okay for the Poles to have wanted and cheered for a Polish Pope but God forbid the formally colonized in Latin America want a Latino Pope even if he’s a white Latino. It’s much better the Popes be all Italian and have the name Medici or Borgia.

 what?

Just what I said. Too many white people would rather have 3 Popes–all white–with 2 anti-Popes than have a Pope from Latin America, Africa, or Asia especially if that Pope isn’t white.

If the Cardinals pick an Italian Pope that will be seen as especially backwards to the globe. And God forbid after his election we have more Vatican secrets leaked that he previously many years ago helped secure Vatican bank loans for Sicilian La Cosa Nostra.

Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that Evangelical Protestants will be converting more Latinos to Protestantism after that ridiculous nonsense.

And you can bet you if an Italian Pope is picked the Italians will be out in the streets celebrating. Same with any white ethnicity. The only time others will look at such cheering and rallying around ethnic/racial/national pride as vice is if the Pope is non-white or white and Latin American.

I don’t think anyone would look askance at people of any ethnicity celebrating a pope from among them, but at the same time I think it is inappropriate to choose the pope based on his race. The only time the country of origin should be a deciding factor would be whether the candidate is from Italy, as it is appropriate that a roman should be bishop of Rome. I have no idea what you are talking about with this three popes and two antipopes nonsense.

If an Italian is selected it would be because that is who is best to lead the Church. Just the same as if an Asian, African, or South American is selected. The Church should be lead by the person that leads us to God, not the one we feel best represents us. You don’t see me pulling for a middle aged computer programming former atheist just because that would best represent me. I will celebrate the new Pope regardless of where they are from.

Wow. Let it go, brother!

Look – I’m not attacking your ‘report’ of the ‘fact’ of the interview. Rather, once I read what you had ‘reported’, I offered my reaction: the point of view expressed in the interview (i.e., the ‘rationale’ or the ‘argument’ they presented) sounds similar to the Rome/Constantinople debate of the early Church.
You seem to have some vested interest in argument over this issue…I do not.🙂
:ehh: Umm… whatever…
