Video mentioned the calling into question of celibacy rules now with surge of reports of sexual abuse. Am I missing something or how is making celibacy optional going to affect the sexual preferences of pedophile priests?..even with women available they’re still going to desire little boys sexually. 🤷

Yep. I had someone try to explain their twisted logic on celibacy causing hebo-/pedophilia, and they compared it to men in prison.

I have sometimes wondered if you get sexually screwed up people entering the priesthood because this is a way to negate their problems. A celibate priesthood is not the problem, but better psychological examination is the answer. My concern in the U.S. is that the lack of vocations will have poorly qualified candidates entering the priesthood.

That is one of the “fixes” that has been put into place.

You make a great point! I was a seminarian for a short time and I certainly feel that the lack of vocations has made many dioceses more open to accepting less qualified candidates. And yes, it seems to me as well that the celibacy rule has sort of attracted sexually confused people into the seminary. They go with the idea that seminary will “fix” them but the truth is that the seminary does not address these issues head on. What I saw and heard in seminary is truly appalling. I don’t know if many of the seminaries in our country are truly holy. Many have a very open gay subculture, I am really worried about these places and if I discern that the priesthood is truly my call I would NOT go to the seminaries my diocese uses, I’d rather move half across the country in the search for a truly holy place of learning! Celibacy is only effective when practiced with chastity of mind and body. If the Church feels this rule is really the best then she has to address the issue of homosexuals in the seminaries and priesthood and get rid of them. Sadly they represent a significant proportion of seminarians and priests.

This was addressed by the Vatican in 2005: vatican.va/roman_curia/congregations/ccatheduc/documents/rc_con_ccatheduc_doc_20051104_istruzione_en.html

Of course, the various Archdiocese and seminaries have to implement it. I know our local seminary has. How to deal with the ordained priests with strong same-sex attraction is another matter. I don’t know that we have a handle on the proportion, so it is tough to say how “significant” it is.

It is “significant”. There is an interesting article on it in Sungenis’s site,

There he quotes various studies and priests attesting to the at least higher than usual proportion of gay priests. This wouldn’t be an issue, I believe, if it were not for the alarming rate of unchastity. In the article there is also discussion of the priestly misconduct we don’t discuss. The one with adult men and women. Very interesting stuff.

these abuses should have been stopped with the first one. it was not. the world have become very selfrightneous, so much so, that this very world who are very evil believes to have the right to continue to impose guilt in to the CC.

yes, this world has become very selfrightenous. the world is trying to make the CC looks like an evil organization. since VII, popes continue to apologize. how long before the Church assumes her leadership again and began to deal wiht the situation wihtin instead of letting the world take over her?

And whose fault is this?? The laity’s. Parents stopped encouraging their children to become priests decades ago…and that is why there is a lack of vocations.

I remember a student of mine…he loved to say the rosary. When speaking with his mom, I noted it…and thought perhaps he’ll be a priest one day. Her response? " Not over my dead body". And this was YEARS before the sex abuse scandal.
