Pope blasts gay marriage as 'insidious and dangerous'

This was reportedly done on a trip to Portugal which is on the verge of adopting a law allowing same sex marriage or something similar. (I haven’t reviewed the proposed legislation.) It is an obvious attempt to sway the legislature. This direct involvement in domestic politics is risky, but it is apparently a risk he feels it is necessary to take.

👍 So do I. And, if one were to go by the current legislation on equality, the danger posed by gay marriages and its advocacy are already felt over here.
 
The US Bishops should be supporting the Pope in this matter, rather than supporting - ILLEGAL immigrants.
Where is their group public statement on legalizing Gay Marriage ?

The Pope is absolutely correct and in full conformance with the “Catechism of the Catholic Church, Second Edition”.

Pray for the Pope.
He has a difficult job.
Like herding cats.

Next Nancy Polosi will be asking the Nuns to support gay marriage !

Have any bishops endorsed gay marriage? If not, it would fair to assume that they support the Church’s stance and so don’t have to make a separate statement supporting the Pope’s position.

was he telling the government what to do? or was he telling Catholics, whether legislators or voters, the moral law by which they must, at risk of their immortal souls, make their decisions.

Obviously, only the Pope knows what he intended. The risk is in how his statements are perceived.

We should note that in this address, Benedict was addressing those in the Social Pastoral Care Organizations. He wasn’t addressing the political leaders.

Here is the context of the “insidious and dangerous” quote:

Informed Catholics would also understand what the Holy Father’s message is about. Without doubt, there will be those who will misunderstand him, together with those who will deliberately misreport what he is saying. Those groups are not uncommon these days. What is going to stand out for me would be those outside the Catholic community who will say that the statements are expected of the Holy Father, even if what he says is disagreebale to them.

So was he actually referring to abortion and gay marriage as insidious and dangerous threats? I’m not finding his comments very clear here.

So unless a particular bishop takes a stand against a particular Church teaching, all the bishops should remain silent on a topic.

Is that your premise?

So which bishops were FOR racism back in '79, that the US bishops issued “Brother and Sisters to Us”?

Or do you feel that the bishops were simply being redundant?

Or maybe the bishops correctly recognized that there were elements of the US Church thad did not recognize the sinful character of racism?; in much the same way that there some today who do not recognize the sinful character of gay marriage.
 
Benedict is being faithful and true.

If someone wants to start their own church, they may.👍
 
Orson Scott Card is not the pope, but it seems an appropriate time to once again post a link to his thoughts on homosexual marriage.
 
Bishops are supposted to be our leaders in matters of Faith and Morals, just like the Apostles.

Pray for our Pope, and make certain that your Parish does too. Talk to your Priests if necessary.
Our Pope is a good and holy man. He has enemies within the Church, who do not want to follow Christ’s teachings as given to us in the Bible and in the Catechsim.
