Drudge has it up linking to the LA Times story below, ‘Pope blind in one eye.’
VATICAN CITY – A week after Pope Benedict announced his resignation, more than 50,000 supporters jammed into St. Peter’s Square on Sunday for his next-to-last weekly blessing, as it emerged the aging pontiff may have gone blind in one eye.

Addressing the cheering crowd, which was larger than usual for the Sunday Angelus, Benedict appeared to criticize the infighting that has plagued the Vatican during his reign.

“The church, which is mother and teacher, calls on all its members to renew their spirit, turn back firmly toward God and ignore pride and egoism to live in love,” he said, before asking in Spanish for prayers to be said for the next pope.

New evidence is emerging of Benedict’s declining physical condition. Peter Seewald, a German journalist who has interviewed Benedict on numerous occasions, said that when he last saw the pope 10 weeks ago, his hearing had deteriorated and he appeared to have gone blind in his left eye.

“His body had become so thin that the tailors had difficulty in keeping up with newly fitted clothes. … I’d never seen him so exhausted-looking, so worn down,” he told Focus, a German magazine, on Saturday.

Oh God, who cares if he’s gone blind in one eye? Leave him alone.
 
This is a news story, Drudge Report is sympathetic. I have had it with those who cast dispersions without backup or lack information.
 
I’m glad we have more information on the Pope. It seems to be clear as to why he stepped down.
 
He is a good man. I am confident that his ailments will all be cured when he received by the Lord. I hope he has peace in his retirement.

Yes, we have learned this information, if people can read and inform themselves and don’t have kneejerk reactions and jump to conclusions.

Probably intentionally leaked with all of the speculation.
 
I don’t know about you, but (assuming this information is true) it makes me appreciate Pope Benedict’s decision that much more. God bless you, Pope Benedict!

Exactly, I think it’s important info if correct that is.

It paints a sympathetic picture of the Pontiff.

It would show how hard he is working and has been working versus Adversity.
 
His is a good man and I very much respect him for making a very hard decision.

:amen: Thank you for posting this. It just makes me appreciate our Holy Father that much more and inspires me to pray for him that much harder. I think it’s significant to remember that he had wanted to retire when Blessed John Paul was in office. His unselfish loyalty and dedication is moving and courageous. He has most decidely earned his rest. I’ll miss him a lot but I know it’s for the best. And it feels weird to have my heart breaking for him and also looking forward to the new Pope. :bighanky:
 
What all these revelations prove is that the Vatican is very good at keeping secrets, until such time that they want people to know them. That can be a good thing or a bad thing-depending on what secrets they want to keep and why.

Having said that, the Pope has given the Church a tremendous gift which will live long after he is gone from this earth. He has set the precedent for any other Pope to do the exact same thing should the need arise.

Sometimes the Vatican has to keep things private until the right moment comes to make an announcement. Knowing when to speak and when to be silent is known as the virtue of prudence. Everything is beautiful in its time.

At the same time, though: I don’t believe the Vatican had an obligation to tell the world every single personal detail about the Pope’s health. The health of the Pope is ultimately a very personal and private matter.

Good point. I don’t think the Vatican HAS to tell us. I’m sure this information was released with the Pope’s permission.
