The Pope has summoned the world’s cardinals, including Ireland’s Sean Brady, to Rome next week for a summit meeting to respond to the clerical child sex abuse crisis.
This will be the first time that Pope Benedict XVI has placed the abuse scandals, that have rocked the Catholic Church, for consideration by a summit of 203 cardinals.
But the unprecedented move was received sceptically by victims of paedophile clerics who claimed that most cardinals have poor records in dealing with abuse cases

Is there anyway to read the article without all the audio commercials? It’s very distracting.

Yes. At the top of the article you’ll see “Print” and it will open in a new window/tab. Then simply close the tab from where the commercials are coming from.
Voila, Non-annoying article… Less annoying actually if you have my background. I’ll only believe it when the Pope excommunicates all of the known clergy. Then I’ll believe the Church cares for its flock more than (whatever gut feeling pops up here). Someone needs to close the book on this. I think Benedict is the Man that can do it. I love Pope Benedict XVI.

And, again, the MSM misses the point.

From the Holy See Press Office:

Ore 9.30, celebrazione dell’Ora Media.

So think about this here:

at 9:30, after Lauds, they will be discussing:
  • New challenges for the Church
  • The Liturgy
at 17:30, after Vespers, they will be discussing:
  • 10 year anniversary of Dominus Iesus
  • Response of the Church in regards to sexual abuse
  • Anglicanorum coetibus
When you put it all in context, it is going to be discussed…but only as a part of an overall agenda. It is not a crisis meeting that is being held solely for the purpose of dealing with this issue (like the MSM would have you believe)

For you non-Italian readers, like me.
By letter dated October 30, the dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Angelo Sodano S.Em.za, informed all members of the College of Cardinals elected and new - before the celebration of the Ordinary Public Consistory of November 20 - The Saint Father invites you to attend the previous day, Friday, November 19, a “day of reflection and prayer” to be held at the New Hall of the Synod of Bishops in the Vatican, whose program is as follows
9.30, celebration of the Hour Media. In the morning there will be two themes: the status of religious freedom in the world and new challenges (with explanatory memorandum to Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone) and the Liturgy in the Church today (with Introduction of the Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship Divine and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Cardinal Antonio Cañizares).
17 Hours, Evening Prayer. Then there will be three announcements: the first “Ten years after Dominus Iesus” (Archbishop Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints), the second “the Church’s response to cases of sexual abuse” and the third on the Constitution " Anglicanorum coetibus "(both of Cardinal William Joseph Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith).
Don’t you just love Google’s translator?

Exactly right. And let’s not forget that the main reason the cardinals are all coming together in the first place is for the consistory where 24 more men are being elevated to cardinal.

I didn’t know whether to chuckle or shake my head in disbelief when I saw them use the term “sex-abuse summit.” That implies that they are being called together for the purpose of discussing this topic and only this topic. Ah well…

I’m sorry everyone. It would appear that I got an article that truly doesn’t focus on the matters to do discussed. Sorry for the misleading title as well. My bad.😦

It’s not your fault. You didn’t come up with the title. 🙂

I’m sorry for getting a bit side-tracked. It’s hard for me not to notice the media spin on these stories.

That said, this really is an important meeting and I think it’s great that they’re discussing the sex abuse scandal. I pray it yields great fruit and a chance for healing.

Not only is the clergy sex abuse scandal not the central point of discussion, but the meeting will handle that issue, together with two other important topics, after about 5:30 pm. Hardly a “sex-abuse summit”!

Are not these “known clergy”, as you call them, also members of the Church’s flock?

Are they not forgiven of their sins when they confess them as we all are, after all we are all sinners.

The Church should not turn its back on anyone. I think a reading of and mediatation on the prodigal son might be in order.

I feel equally about married people that cheat on their spouse. I feel the same about mortal sins. This is of particular evil because these men are more culpable than the average lay person. They study this for many years. I’m talking about repreat offenders…not the one that messed up badly once or even a few times. But when someone molests anyone that is below the age of reason or are vulnerable children, it is particularly heinous and deserves extraordinary punishment.

Sure, they can be forgiven. But that doesn’t mean they should be allowed to blend in with society at large. They should be in prison. People in history have been excommunicated for far less and I’m just saying that I support the excommunication of anyone that enabled these monsters. Any bishop that hid a clergy knowing they were doing this should also receive similar punishment. The only way to lift their excommunication is for their immediate resignation as prelate and for them to go into reclusive retirement. The men and women that molest should be required to attend certain parishes setup by the church so that they can not cross the path of children - if it was children. It’s a protection against the innocence. Excommunication does not mean they are going to hell. But in order for them to be repentant, they must do the required penance for the rest of their life if necessary for their own salvation.

Don’t accept or ignore bad behavior. If someone molested your child, you wouldn’t want them to have access to yours or another child in a different location. How can this be monitored? The same way we monitor other offenders in the civil society. It’s not perfect but it does establish clear laws that have severe penalties. We’ve become far too laxed on administer justice in my opinion. It is causing a huge rift in the congregation of the faithful. Many Catholics are running from the Church because its leadership hasn’t, doesn’t won’t, or acts too slow in fixing these problems. I could come up with many analogies but believe that the obvious should speak for itself.

It’s my opinion and sure everyone deserves forgiveness. But foregiveness comes with a price called reparation and avoiding the near occasion of sin…

I can agree with everything you said in this post.

But what you said in this post is different from excommunication.

Excommunication removes a person from the Church and the Sacraments.

Well, for me its a bit too personal. My initial gut reactions to to react rather harshly. The problem with the internet and especially this site is the lack of forgiveness when someone has a moment of regurgitation. Instead of excommunication I should have said execution. Gut reaction again.
