Well, we’re not the only ones who need to bring those barriers down:
I said nothing that an honest communicant of the Roman communion wouldn’t have also affirmed…unless of course you think that it is possible that your church is not what it claims to be. (Don’t worry; I already know that’s not possible for you. That’s my point, in fact. We’re equally committed to our distinctives.)

I wouldn’t expect most Orthodox would consider their choice of Ecclesial Communion to be the “next best thing.” When Catholics publicly call the Orthodox Churches “second best” or deficient it just builds up those barriers to communion that still persist. 😦
For what it’s worth, I personally agree with your point. The official position of the Catholic Church is that Orthodoxy is indeed orthodox. But the reality is most Orthodox consider Catholicism heretical and some consider us completely devoid of grace…to say Orthodoxy is “second best” is an honor many Orthodox would never accord to Catholicism.

Exactly. I’m not going to lie and say that there is no division between us. I called Eastern Orthodox the next best thing because it’s true that they aren’t in full communion with us. EO is better than being a Protestant but not as good as being in full communion with the one universal Church founded by Christ. This is how the Catholic Church sees it, and this is a Catholic website. I didn’t say that what they have is totally bad. In fact, I was saying they are almost perfect. And, I included a 🙂 in my post, so I don’t know why they interpreted what I said as hateful. 🤷

Why do you both feel a need to typify who’s the second best and third best and what not? We all believe that our Churches are all the best, hence why we’re members of them. Is really any need to continue beyond that?

I said that the Eastern Orthodox are almost perfect. I don’t think there’s any more charitable way to say it from a Catholic point of view. I wouldn’t be offended if an EO said they viewed us that way.

I’m still confused as to what this has to do with my conversion, since I did not become Eastern Orthodox… 🤷

That might be my fault, sorry. I just saw “the Orthodox are second best,” and I felt a need to say something. I wasn’t trying to imply anything by that, so you have my apologies.

Hmm. I didn’t read it that way. Livingwordunity’s post #37 in combination with #48 seem to conflate OO and EO. Not that it matters, it just all seems very weird and off-topic to me. I wasn’t offended, just confused.

Wait, I thought all of you guys were crossing your fingers and whispering “I hope Rome names us as the second-best church” over and over?

\end{tongue in cheek}

Oh, well I’m personally glad to hear that something wasn’t my fault; it’s nice to hear every once and awhile :D.

That almost sounds like some sort of bizarre, ecclesiastical beauty-pageant :D.

Not to beat this to death, but I’d like to expand on my point. I hope you don’t mind, stranger, but I’m going to use you for an example. I would never tell you “Oh well, it’s kind of good that you’re ritually Eastern; second place with the Latins is nice, too.” I don’t see the point in saying that my Church is the best, followed by Eastern Catholics, then Ukrainian Lutherans and Mar Thoma third, and finally Georgian Baptists with the veneer of eastern vestments a distant fourth. That doesn’t help anything of any sort. Now, I know nobody here was meaning it insultingly of course, and I’m explaining this to prove that the stereotype I’ve seen where it’s perceived that Eastern Christians of the three different Churches are overly-offended curmudgeons and it’s the Catholic Church that is just so polite and has made all the strides toward peace, dialogue, and understanding. I think it’s helpful if we can accept what we agree with in different Churches, and what we disagree with. I disagree with a lot of the Anglican Church’s actions and teachings, like the recent decision that vestments are no longer necessary for Church of England priests, but I can admit that some people in the entire church uphold orthodox tenets of faith, like a good friend of mine who has decided to stand his ground in the Episcopal Church and do all that he can to swing the pendulum back from heresy to orthodoxy instead of jumping ship and becoming a member of the Anglican ordinariate or Western Orthodox. These are just my thoughts on the matter, at least.

Be nice Kosta. :tsktsk:

😃

Seriously, though, it could be more like a buddy cop movie…
Sylvestor Stallone: I heard you were the second best cop in LA
Kurt Russell: That’s funny, I heard the same thing about you.

In the video of the liturgy with the pope it shows Coptic priests wearing the priestly hats concelebrating,youtube.com/watch?v=kP60lZtMRns. Did Coptic Catholic priests always wear these or has Patriarch Sidrak reintroduced them? I have never seen Coptic Catholic priests wear these before.

Do you mean the mitres? Coptic Orthodox priests wear those during the liturgy, so I would assume this is something they carried over into the Catholic church that came from that tradition.

Thank you I didn’t know if they were called mitres or something else. I know they are used in the Coptic Orthodox Church but I have never seen them used by the Coptic Catholics as they are very latinized.
