Pope changes Vatican criminal code

Although this news is from July 11th, there hasn’t been much repercussion in the forums about this news, and I would like to see which is the opinion of you all.

Pope Francis changed the Vatican criminal code abolishing life imprisonment and commuting it for a 35 year sentence.

Now, this is kind of interesting.

First of all, I’m pretty much sure there isn’t many men imprisoned at Vatican City, so, why change the criminal code in this aspect? It doesn’t change anything virtually. It seems like a demagogic approach to today’s feeling towards prisoners.

Also, what does the Church teaches us about life imprisonment? Does it say anything? Like, what is the justification for the change of this sentence in the Vatican?

I thought about something like if you have a life imprisonment it would mean no forgiveness, yet, I also think that forgiveness is something between the convict and God. Still the convict needs to pay to society the wrongdoings he committed.

Am I self-explanatory?

Pretty interesting to me. It’s the first I’ve heard of it. It brings to mind issues about jurisdiction, to me, as in: who is subject to the Vatican State’s jurisdiction?

But I don’t want to get caught up in another discussion about the Vatican State. It’s no secret I hate the idea.
