Hi Ed! It seems that you and I are on the same wave length and time table! We both posted this same thread at the exact minute (12:32 pm).
 
Francis and the Franciscans are and have been a very shrewd lot. They take a vow of poverty and own nothing. Thus they purport to have disclaimed and avoided worldliness. But, and this is important, asserting they are poor, they ask and receive what they need gratis from others who have not renounced “worldliness.” This boils down to the power to use the property of others without the burden of responsibility of taking care of it. Very shrewd indeed.
