So were the “traditional bishops” the ones who spoke out or the ones who kept silent about the skeletons in our closet?
Good point. I think it’s too easy to point fingers at Vatican II and the “liberal” bishops and priests on this. It seems to me that the priests and the bishops who were in office when the abiuse was taking place was pre-Vatican II.

Sometimes the finger points right back at ourselves. Reflecting on your post it occurred to me that concern for the victims and what their lives must have been life until now has been a secondary concern in my mind and in much of the discussion I’ve seen on the issue.

We all seem focused on what this means for the Church, for the Pope, for our own kids…but what about the victims? Where’s the outpouring of concern, sorrow over their plight, the prayers, the show of support for them? It’s not about us - it’s about a horrible, scary thing that happened to defenseless children and which probably produced some seriously scarred adults.

Was it this very attitude that led too many Church leaders to focus more on avoiding publicizing scandal and damage to the Church’s image than on seeking justice against the perpetrators?

Prayer for the protection of the Church.

O glorious St Michael, guardian and defender of the Church of Jesus Christ, come to the assistance of the Church, against which the powers fo hell are unchained, guard with especial care her august head(BXVI) and all the bishops and priests who are faithfull to the Church, and obtain for them and for us the hour of triumph may speedily arrive.

Santa Maria, pray for us.

When are they ever going to clean house? There are just too many people involved in these scandals and coverups that are still receiving protection.

Bernard Law and Roger Mahony are two that come to mind.

I wish the Church would take care of this soon, so we don’t have to continue to be part of a church that aids and abets child molesters.

You are absolutely right…I just saw this today:
bostonherald.com/news/international/europe/view.bg?articleid=1243437

It was taken from Kathpress…I just heard on the noon news that they started the same thing in Germany and they are getting alot of calls…All christians need to be praying for your church as it affects all of us…

I hope and pray that some of you are not involved in the justice system. The numbers in that article was a call log report. The real story is that there is a hot line and the logs are kept. Yet everyone will focus on the numbers, not the facts. Where I work we get 2-10 complaints a day. Half a dozen times a year some wrong-doing is substantiated.

We know that the CC has many enemies. i wouldnt doubt that many just jump in the bandwagon to make the case worse than it really is.

the news is well known to make things worse than really is. they exagerate and use words that is not really there. this is their job security and bread winner. they will be talking about it so much that at the end of day that witch was just a scratch became more…you know what.

Prayer for the protection of the Church.

Amen, friend. I am praying for the Church, the Pope, and for my Catholic brothers and sisters. I’m also praying that Satan’s desire to turn Christian eyes from the Cross during Holy Week, via the news media, would be crushed.

I listened to Donahue on CNN trying to explain that the problem is not pedophilia but homosexuality and I had this sinking feeling that we’re just shooting ourselves in the foot with that argument.

At the time of the study he quoted (which I’ve seen presented also on this forum), what proportions of little girls would have been in situations where they were alone with a priest? I know that has only happened three or four times in my whole adult life (even at confession there are others waiting nearby), so the validity of just looking at the sexes of victims and drawing conclusions about sexual orientation is dubious at best.

His argument could hold water if it could be shown that the offending priests had equal access to children of either sex. As it stands, it just sounds like we as a Church are simply trying to push blame off ourselves and onto some ‘other’ that is not us…

Your right on that assessment in more ways than one…

A Synod is not a decision-making body. It offers advice to the Pope, who makes any real decisions. This is from a reply to “frequently asked questions” prepared by the USCCB:

What role does the Pope play in the Synod?

The Holy Father convokes the Synod and establishes the topic to be discussed. He ratifies the election of members of the Synod chosen by the various Episcopal Conferences and appoints additional members. He determines the agenda and presides over its sessions, either in person or through others. The Holy Father receives the proposals of the Synod and acts on them as he deems appropriate.

There is no possibility that a group of liberals could hijack a synod and change Church policies regarding married clergy, women priests, etc… The Pope convokes a synod, picks its topic, determines the agenda, presides over its sessions and decides whether to act on the bishops’ suggestions – or not. I’m not sure you understand just how tightly controlled the Church is by the Pope and Curia and just how few liberal bishops there are after the long tenure of John Paul II, who appointed most of the world’s bishops.
It is also true that outside Europe, liberals are in the minority.
