Man is not in charge today, money is in charge, money rules. God our Father did not give the task of caring for the earth to money, but to us, to men and women: we have this task! Instead, men and women are sacrificed to the idols of profit and consumption: it is the “culture of waste.”
Pope Francis is really stressing catholic social doctrine which is the least understood and lest implemented gift of our church.

God bless our Holy Father and grant him many years.

I work in retail and where i work there is a lot of waste. A supermarket tries to sell and make a profit. THey do this by many means. To me supermarkets over price there products and when then cannot sell it will them reduce it then throw it out. They put alot of stress on managers, and workers when things are not going to how they want. They want everything to be perfect even when they cut stuff and their are luck of staff to do a good job so everybody takes short cuts to get the job done. But in the end we can not do anything about it because we need the to survive and pay the bills.

I once told someone that the top managers do all these things to make it hard on themselves and on others and for what. the money and profit in which the supermarkets make go nowhere. it belongs to nobody.

Thank you for the quote. However, do you have a link to where the quote came from? I find it a bit ambiguous as to which points he is stressing and the background that goes with and where it leads…whether the social in the church proper, or people of the church in society, ecology, incorrect prioritization, or misuse of funds…

One has to wonder what Romney and Paul Ryan would say about the Holy Father’s comments. We all know how evil the democrats are with the culture of death, but I think we accept too much of the worship of mammon uncritically when we support the GOP who reduce everything to “generating wealth” and soley focusing on the economy. I remember when GWB asked Americans to go shopping or something like that.

Catholics should be vilified by the right and left, after all, the world has been handed over to the devil.

The original post has a link (click on Pope Francis) to the Vatican radio website where this is from. It includes the entire catechisis.

What? The GOP reduces everything to “generating wealth?” Really? Please do not overspeak your position and thereby lose credibility with respect to valid points. The GOP position is focused on providing opportunity rather than dividing up the pie. If you see that as “reducing everything to wealth generation” I think you are mistaken.

As to President Bush’s comment “go shopping” this was right after 9/11 and both the populace and the economy was paralyzed with fear. He said that the terroists win if we hide out in our houses and that we need to go on with our normal daily lives. Or as Blessed John Paul II said, be not afraid. Please put the words into context. President Bush wanted us to get out of our paralysis, get the economy moving again, get planes back in the sky and the lights back on Broadway.

When you use stereotypes that are not valid, you don’t make a strong point. No one wants children to go hungry or senior to go without medical care or bridges to fall into the water. But there are different paths to the same objective. I wish more politicians would look at the incredible logic, compassion and effectiveness of using Catholic social teaching, including subsidearity which is the forgotten among them.

When it comes down to economic questions it does. Basically trickle down wealth through deregulation creating a Walmart America nightmare. Im not saying the Democrats are much better. Anyone who belongs to the GOP should really question how do the economic views of the GOP create a culture of waste and consumerism. We owe allegiance to the Church and not political parties who are consumed with power and money.

I don’t think you have a very good understanding of GOP economic principles. “Trickle down wealth through deregulation” sounds like a bumper sticker. You are wrong. Please get a better understanding of the Conservative approach to economics. For example economic freedom, earned success versus learned dependence, improvement to education through school choice…none of this sounds like “trickle down wealth.”

Maybe you could actually cite a specific proposal or legislation. As a Conservative I do not like being characterized erroneously as some sort of heartless Simon Legree.

Further you are correct that we owe our allegiance to the Church and to follow the teachings of the Church. Pope Francis has clearly advanced Catholic Social Teaching as he believes this has been forgotten to some extent. There is nothing in Catholic Social Teaching that is the antithesis of Traditional American and Conservative values.

I am on the RCIA team and teach this section every year. I am quite conversant with the provisions of CST. Policies that support life, that support the inherent dignity of every human being, supporting the family, the value of work, solidarity and subsidiarity. These are all part of the Conservative position.

I think both Romney and Ryan would agree with his statement. Why do you think either of them are in favor of waste?

Uh, cutting tax rates for the wealthy under Bush-Cheney, then fighting tooth and nail to keep those cuts in place under the current GOP leadership. Opposing regulation of Wall Street at practically every turn. Just off the top of my head.

They both adhered religiously to the exaltation of profit, which is what this Pope is referring to. Ryan was a disciple of Ayn Rand. Enough said.

This Pope helps make the teachings of Christ so tangible. He totally rocks.

The problem is the church doesn’t offer technical solutions. Instead the church offers us the truth; Ideas like sustainable, justice, solidarity, common good, subsidiarity, development of people and just wealth redistribution should be part of a economic plan. None of these are found in the 2012 GOP economic platform found online.

Instead we read about “American Excepsionalism” and “Peace through strength”. This is not of Christ but of the world.
Therefore, it must be borne in mind that grave imbalances are produced when economic action, conceived merely as an engine for wealth creation, is detached from political action, conceived as a means for pursuing justice through redistribution.

“Just wealth redistribution?” OK now I know where you are coming from.

Please go back to Catholic Social Teaching. What is the FUNDAMENTAL AND PRIMARY FOCUS? The protection of human life from conception until natural death. Without that everything else is moot.

Now which party platform focuses on the protection of life? Not the Democrats who featured an abortopalooza at the DNC. Not Obama who says “God bless you” to Planned Parenthood.

Please get your priorities straight.

Without life you can have all of the social programs in the world but millions of dead babies will never participate in society and help to make it a better place.

Is there anything in CST that says the state is to take money from one group and give it to another ?

Didn’t think so.

Please quit using bumper stickers to demonize half of America. The Bush tax cuts were not only across the board but more people went completely OFF the tax rolls due to low income. The lowest group had a fifty percent reduction. Further the tax cuts increased revenue to the Treasury just as happened under Reagan and Kennedy.

The DEMOCRATS opposed legislation that might have prevented the collapse of Fanny and Freddy which was part of the snowball that destroyed our economy. The death knell was promoted by Obamacare (Democrat) and Dodd Frank (Democrat).

Tell me what regulations Bush opposed? He was the one who tried multiple times to rein in Freddy and Fanny, to warn of their collapse. Did you hear these two are even worse off than originally thought?

Lisa, redistribution of wealth is mentioned 8 times in Benedict XVI’s Caritas in Veritate. If you don’t like the sound of it, take it up with the Holy Father. Seeking recognition of the dignity of every person made in the image of God, including the unborn, and a just redistribution of wealth are part of catholic social teaching. There is no conflict between these subjects and one flows into the other.

The GOP are calling for more expenditures on arms. This is insane–we spend more than the top 10 defense spending countries combined. These insane arms races *swallow up the resources needed for the development of national economies and for assistance to the less developed nations * (centesimus annus 18)
Spending enormous sums to produce ever new types of weapons impedes efforts to aid needy populations;111 it thwarts the development of peoples. Over-armament multiplies reasons for conflict and increases the danger of escalation.

No one doesn’t flow from another. The primacy of protecting LIFE first and from that everything flows.

In contrast the Democrat party is the ANTI-LIFE party between their unmitigated support of abortion on demand, preferably at taxpayer expense, free birth control, homosexual “marriage.”

Without life nothing else happens. “Redistribution of wealth” is no where in Catholic social teaching and the socialist overtones of this philosophy was anathema to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. However Left leaning Catholics usually try to justify their support for Democrats by claiming the various government social programs they support are more important than supporting the protection of life from conception until natural death.

Lisa, both depend ultimately on whether we are made in the image of God and is why we should ultimately treat everyone with dignity. If I see the dignity of weakest and most vulnerable (which includes the unborn), why wouldn’t I want them to have a just distribution of wealth?
“Redistribution of wealth” is no where in Catholic social teaching
Economic life undoubtedly requires contracts, in order to regulate relations of exchange between goods of equivalent value. But it also needs just laws and** forms of redistribution governed by politics**, and what is more, it needs works redolent of the spirit of gift.
Caritas in Veritate 37. Redistribution of wealth is mentioned 8 times in this encyclical. Do you still disagree? The importance is that the common good requires it.
