Believers, maybe it will be helpful for me to understand your denial of Purgatory by first understanding your understanding of sin and salvation. Please don’t quote scripture. I wish to know in your own words what you believe the Bible teaches on these things.

Do you believe sin actually wounds or affects your soul?

If so I do not understand why you deny Purgatory.

Your soul will still be wounded when you die if you have yet to repent of venial sins. But we must be perfect to enter the Kingdom, right. So unless your perfect when you die you can only got to Hell.

God in his infinite mercy allows for Purgatory so that those who die before confessing these small infractions against Gods will can still be saved.

The Bible is clear that even anger is an afront to Gods eminance. Have you gotten angry lately. Ever been cut off in traffic. Or when you were in school ever cheat on a test, copy homework, lie to a teacher. Those are sins.

Unless you believe that a Christian can get into the Kingdom without repenting from there sins. (if you do then I’m sure I won’t be the only one to have a few questions for you)

You must believe in Purgatory

The Priest brought this up at mass today and said all the pope is saying is that the catholic Church is the original church - the rest are all just break off’s. He was not saying that the Catholic church is the only way to salvation but certainly not all other churches have it right. For example, some Christian denominations only came about coz some king in England could not get a divorce so he broke away from the catholics and started I think C of E which would be episcople (spell?) in the USA. thats my take anyway 😃

“Episcopal.”

Yep, that’s pretty much it. Jesus founded the Catholic Church. At various times in history, different people decided they were smarter than Jesus, and started up their own churches to go to, instead of His Church. Today, most of the people who go to those churches have no idea about the history of what happened - they go there because it’s where their parents brought them when they were little, or because it happened to be the one they were close to when they decided they needed to start going to Church when they were adults.

Sin is disobedience to God’s Word. Because of Adam’s disobedience, judgment of eternal damnation has been passed onto all of mankind… not just a “stain of a sinful nature”. We all have a serious sin problem that needs to be dealt with. God has provided only one way to deal with this problem and it is through faith only.

New Testament salvation is by Grace through faith alone. Faith is believing and obeying ONLY God’s Word. God’s Word says repentance is absolutely necessary.

By Grace through faith is simple yet complex. God provided a door and the only way to enter is with the correct faith. If you have faith that is vain, the door is closed. In other words, you’ve fallen from grace. If you have the correct faith, you are justified.

Purgatory is not in the Word of God.

I think that it is totally unworthy to suggest that there is something wrong with the Pope because he was in the Hitler Youth, whether or not it was voluntary. I have many disagreements with the Church’s teaching but something like this is silly. Are we to think any less of Paul because he previously persecuted Christians?
Thank you!! The voice of sweet reason!!👍
We are all of us,😦 sinners. I know that I am–😊 big time. Why Jesus would die for somebody like me, is a total mystery…
But, He’s like that… And He loves His servant, Benedict 16, & that is all I need to know about it.
Personally, I wouldn’t dare throw aspersions against the Holy Father. I am too aware of 😊 my own failings.
** I recommend contemplating one’s own failings to those who want to throw mud at the pope.**
Well I say maybe you don’t really know exactly what the Catholic church teaches. There is a difference between what a person “believes” about Catholic dogma, and fact.
I’m not trying to belittle anyone, but a very high percentage of individuals here are misinformed when they talk about what the Catholic church teaches.
God Bless,
Robert
With all due respect::rolleyes: One individual I know who is misinformed, is named (ahem, cough, cough) “Robert”. A little humility & a willingness to admit that :tsktsk: you too, can make mistakes, is a great way to grow in knowledge, Robert. I recommend it. Highly. :twocents:
God bless.

believers:
Purgatory is not in the Word of God.
In:shrug: your personal opinion.
I myself, find it all over the place. Maybe an open mind while reading?? I dunno. I just read & study my Bible, without carrying in the opinion of somebody who just showed up on the 'Net, & started slinging mud around. And lo & behold, there it is!!
;)But, hey! That’s just me.

I have gotta ask: The president announces he wants you to come to the White House for dinner. What do you choose of these alternatives:
  1. Take a bath, wash your hair, & put on your nice clothes.
    OR:
  2. Change the catbox, & go to meet the president in your muddy blue jeans smelling of cat pee, spilled beer,& stale sour sweat, with your hair uncombed, & without brushing your teeth.
Personally, I would do the 1st alternative… No question, & I don’t even like this president!! Much less do I owe him for going to the cross on Calvary for me…
But again: Hey, that’s just me. What do:rolleyes: I know?? I’m just one generation removed from a:wink: full-fledged hillbilly…but, I wasn’t, :byzsoc: thank God, brought up in a barn…🤷

God bless all here.

Mar 4:14
The sower soweth the word.
One might. Then again, one might sow weeds:

Another parable he proposed to them, saying: The kingdom of heaven is likened to a man that sowed good seeds in his field.

25 But while men were asleep, his enemy came and oversowed cockle among the wheat and went his way.

26 And when the blade was sprung up, and had brought forth fruit, then appeared also the cockle.

My point is that it is not proper for you to proseltyize on this board, no matter what you think you are sowing! It may be wheat to you, but weeds to a Catholic.

The Word does not say it was John. I have no problem with being corrected but I’d like to see the verse if I’m wrong. I believe it is RCC tradition that says it was John.
John 21:24 This is that disciple who giveth testimony of these things, and hath written these things; and we know that his testimony is true.

This account is only found in John, presumably because he was the only Apostle present.

However, what you say is true, tradition records that John was the one that took Jesus Mother into his care.

Not at all. john was there, that is why, jesus said to him to watch his mother. so in my view james is not jesus brother as some claim. Jesus would have had told john to have james watch his mother. That was the custom in those days. A son would be responsible for the mother not a another person.

first of all. I do not believe in praying the rosary. i can pray to jesus directly. second, when mary stuck her nose in jesus ministry, he told her he was here to do his fathers works, not here for her.
Please demonstrate where Jesus told Mary He was not here for her.
you are talking to no dummie.
Perhaps a “yes” dummie? :yup: 😉

Let’s just take one verse. The first verse has nothing to do with Purgatory.

Mt 5:48 - be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect

Mat 5:44
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Mat 5:45
That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.

Mat 5:46
For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same?

Mat 5:47
And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more [than others]? do not even the publicans so?

Mat 5:48
Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.

Here’s the second verse. Again, no purgatory. Heb 12:14 - strive for that holiness without which cannot see God

Hbr 12:14
Follow peace with all [men], and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord:

Third, “Jam 3:2 - we all fall short in many respects” (!!!)

Jam 3:1
My brethren, be not many masters, **knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
**
Jam 3:2
For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same [is] a perfect man, [and] able also to bridle the whole body.
This whole thread is dangerously close to getting closed for being off topic. I moved the purgatory topic to here:

Hi
Kindly tell me know for how long James or John took care of Mary?
Nobdy gives any detail regarding that. Why?
Since now Catholic make statues of her and keep them in the churches; they must have detail account of Mary’s after when Jesus departed last from Galilee.Did John wrote this detail, as Jesus had trusted her in his care or James did it. Why could’t they come to show the trust reposed in them by Jesus?
Did they disregard his intructions ? Please don’t mind.
Thanks

This is protestant preaching. You know I was a Protestant. Your argument is not better than our. It helps to illustrate if we do just one thing that is different not five or whatever.

So, we need to know what you believe. It isn’t enough for you to say Purgatory is evil, you have to tell us what happens instead.

48 And seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: Son, why hast thou done so to us? behold thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 49 And he said to them: How is it that you sought me? did you not know, that I must be about my father’s business? 50 And they understood not the word that he spoke unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart
First, Jesus was 12 when he said this. By Jewish law, He was not even a man, but a child.

Second, far from telling Mary to ‘mind her own business’ and not ‘stick her nose in’ He is in fact simply acknowledging that He is surprised that they would not realize where He was, and, on hearing that they had been worried, immediately left with then and was subject to them. What do you think that means? If Christ was ‘telling off his mother’, why did He immediately leave the temple with her and place himself under her authority?

Now, if you are as you have often stated some 50 years old, with at least 2 marriages and possibly children of your own or at least some experience of them you would not possibly have made your statements the way you do. They read, in their casual disrespect and derision, like the statements of a 16 year old who is convinced that his own parents are unbelievably stupid, and whose disrespect of them, in his ‘journey toward autonomy’ spills over into disrespect for other parents and their relationships and indeed to a perceived ‘authority’.

“You’re not the boss of me”! Contemporary words for the age-old rebellion of most adolescents.

as a matter of fact, they were stupid compared to him. What did trhey teach him? If anything he taught them.
