Pope Dedicates 2015 "Year of Consecrated Life"

Good news! Do we know when this “year” will start? They’ve run with the liturgical calendar in the past, so I assume Nov 2014?

The announcement did not specify. I’m sure more details will surface in time. These special years don’t always follow the liturgical year, though. With the exception of the Year of Faith ending with the end of the liturgical year, the only special years in recent memory that followed the liturgical year were the years for the Father, Son and, Holy Spirit leading up to the new millennium. The others generally started and ended around dates significant to the theme of the year.

Not every year is dedicated to something. Ordinarily, these special years don’t go back to back.

Here are the more recent ones:
  • Year of Faith: October 11, 2012 - November 24, 2013
  • Year for Priests: June 19, 2009 - June 11, 2010
  • Year of St. Paul: June 28, 2008 - June 29, 2009
  • Year of the Eucharist: October 10, 2004 - October 29, 2005
  • Year of the Rosary: October 2002 - October 31, 2003
  • Jubilee Year: December 24, 1999 - January 6, 2001
  • Year of the Father: November 29, 1998 - November 27, 1999
  • Year of the Spirit: November 30, 1997 - November 28, 1998
  • Year of the Son: November 30, 1996 - November 29, 1997
  • International Year of the Family: December 26, 1993 - December 31, 1994
  • Year of Mary: June 7, 1987 - August 15, 1988
Around the Jubilee, they were going non-stop. And the Year of St. Paul and the Year for Priests actually overlapped a bit. But otherwise, there is usually a break between them.

okay. thank you for the clarification and the lists of previous years. interesting. I became Catholic in 2008 so I figured it was every year. in 2011 I was distracted by a serious accident and recovering and returning to work, so I probably overlooked the fact that there was no dedication to a them for that year. I like it when there is a special dedication.
I bought a book which was a daily accompaniment to the Year of Faith and really enjoyed reading it everyday.

🙂 I agree, they are nice. My memory goes back to the years for each person of the Trinity leading up to the Jubilee, though I wasn’t paying as close attention back then. When the Year of Faith came around, I started keeping a log and going back to see what else I could find. It’s a little more difficult as the Vatican’s online presence really started in December 1996. Pretty much anything put out since then is online in English. But prior to that, it’s hit-or-miss,

well, the holy spirit must have been moving me because it was in the mid to late 90’s that I began the journey to convert to Catholicism after being a lapsed Episcopalian for about 25 years.
