Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald, once said to be a candidate for the cardinalatial hat, has been promoted from the chairmanship of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue to the Nunciature in Cairo (cumulative with the representation in the Arab League).
Vatican prelate reassigned; more changes to follow?

Vatican, Feb. 15 (CWNews.com) - Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald, the president of the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue, has been named as apostolic nuncio to Egypt. He will also serve as the Vatican’s representative to the Arab League.

Archbishop Fitzgerald is the first head of a major Roman dicastery to be reassigned by Pope Benedict. The Vatican announcement of Archbishop Fitzgerald’s new assignment, release February 15, did not name a successor. With rumors circulating in Rome about shifts and consolidation within the Roman Curia, his departure may be a signal that the Pontifical Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue will be eliminated, with its duties assigned to other Vatican offices.

I am not a fan of this archbishop, but the nunciature in Cairo will be hard.

That’s not the impression I got from reading the article. It seems to me that the idea that the Archbishop was “demoted” because of his “lifestyle” (never described in the part of the article I could access) is merely a rumor put about by “some people.” Hardly solid information on which to base the assumption that he was “demoted.” It could be that PBXVI decided he would be more useful to the Church in the assignment he gave him than as a cardinal. Also, what “doctrinal” issues do the pope and the archbishop disagree on? The article doesn’t tell us that, either.

Not to quibble…

But, exactly what is this article talking about?

They make some claim of problems with the guys “lifestyle” but then say nothing else.

Are you sure that someone isn’t reading a lot into what was expected to be quite a curial shakeup at some point.

There’s been a lot of stories going around that the Pope was going to reorganize the curia…

So, I guess I wonder if this story is really a story at all, or someone with axe grinding to do because they are still smarting from the appiontment of the ostensiably “liberal” archbishop to San Francisco.

I agree, the article doesn’t tell much. Why he was redirected to Egypt is speculation.

I have heard that, while in the Curia with Cardinal Ratzinger, he rather publicly, and loudly, contradicted teachings which originated in Cardinal Ratzinger’s office.

Also heard that he doesn’t leave a vacancy; his former job will be abolished.

John Allen wrote a good article on this today where it basically sounds like this archbishop was doing things that JPII had wanted them done with interreligous dialogue, and that’s not something that B16 was prone to wanting to continue right now.

Pope “demotes” Vatican archbishop over his ‘lifestyle’ (?!)

I don’t thimk so!

I write “Archbishop Michael Fitzgerald sent to Cairo”
