Castel Gandolfo, Sep. 08 (CWNews.com) - Pope Benedict XVI denounced the growing relativism of Canadian culture, in a September 8 discourse to visiting bishops from Ontario.

In his talk to the Canadian bishops, who were making their ad limina visits, the Holy Father spoke bluntly about recent political developments in that country. “In the name of tolerance your country has had to endure the folly of the redefinition of spouse,” he said; “and in the name of freedom of choice it is confronted with the daily destruction of unborn children.”
Speaking in English to the Canadian bishops, who met with him as the papal summer residence in Castel Gandolfo, the Pope remarked that in his first epistle, St. John warned the early Christian community about the divisions that arise when Christians do not “constantly drink anew from the original source, which is Jesus Christ.” Switching to French for a moment, the Pontiff added that the warning voiced by St. John “remains always current.”

What else could he say? “Great job, guys”

He’s talking about the country that gave the world the “Winnipeg Statement” - 103 out of 106 bishops banding together to oppose an encyclical.

What encyclical was that? Just wondering. I’m not very familiar with the “Winnepeg Statement”.

do a ‘google’ for winnepeg statement’ for details. In brief, it was their protest over Humanae Vitae (the encyc. about birth control).

The Canadians have come considerably to terms with a long, long history of racial discrimination in the country, as well as related problems, such as problems with concealing juvenile sex abuse, abuse against women, abuse directed at gays, etc.

The aggressive movement to eliminate gender roles of “father” and “mother” from the schools is ridiculous, but it is consistent with their fervor to eliminate hate crimes againsts gays.

Politicians, as usual, need a lot of political guts to stand up against both the bigotry and the excessive reaction to it. I think it’s a violation of free speech to prosecute people for thoughts and words, but I suspect that this will get sorted out in time.

The Church is now cast as a gender-biased organization, as evidenced by practice and by, of course, the Bible, simply for its language.
