Journalists Ask Him About July 7 London Attacks

LES COMBES, Italy, JULY 21, 2005 (Zenit.org).- Benedict XVI described the July 7 terrorist attacks in London as “irrational,” and clarified that they are not indicative of a “clash of civilizations.”

The Pope expressed these thoughts Wednesday afternoon, when he returned from an outing to the Alpine chalet in Les Combes, where he is vacationing. He made his comments before today’s new rounds of attacks in London.

The Holy Father greeted awaiting journalists and replied to a question about the attacks in the British capital.

“Terrorism is irrational,” he said. “There is no clash of civilizations, but small groups of fanatics.”

In this context, “the dialogue between religions which have Abraham as a Father is important,” he said. “We must ask God to reinforce this will and hope that it will be much stronger than violence.”

Next month Benedict XVI is scheduled to meet with Muslim representatives in Germany and visit Cologne’s synagogue, as part of his trip for World Youth Day. . . .

Um… a grown person jumping up & down and throwing a hissy fit in public is IRRATIONAL…

Getting behind the wheel of a car and driving drunk is IRRATIONAL …not to mention irresponsible which can lead to ACCIDENTLY killing someone.

Bombs dont go off on ACCIDENT…they are planted DELIBERATLEY by a DELUDED mind and they murder people on purpose… that is called EVIL… has the Vatican forgotten how to use words? Does the Pope know that people were blown to bits? This aint the time to play fuzzy and be afraid to upset those who are already deranged…

Terrorism is EVIL…call it like it is Holy Father…

I would say being unreasonable.

You can’t accidently kill someone, you did it cause you did it freely.

I don’t think the Holy Father said anything about the bombs going off on accident. If you think that the Pope doesn’t consider terrorism is evil then why did he say “In the name of God stop.” I really suggest you get all of your facts strait before you criticize.

Like the previous Benedict, he’s trying to be a diplomat. A wise choice, IMO.
 
Oh…kinda like being a diplomat when the BVM instructed the Holy Father in 1917 to unite Russia with her Immaculate Heart? :rolleyes:

But the church in honor of “diplomacy” refused to do so? 😦 …and we all know the CATASTROPHIC mess that so called “diplomacy” for the feelings of evil people caused the ENTIRE WORLD…right? 😉

Why then did they even bother to give legitimacy to the Visions and messages if they werent gonna follow them? :confused:

This isnt a time for “diplomacy” EVIL must be called what it is at ALL TIMES. If the Pope stated it was evil in the past then he should ALWAYS use that word and condemn terrorism as EVIL not irrational.
 
ShroudMan, if I didn’t know better, I’d think you were channeling Lisa4Catholics with all those smilies. There is a time and place to tell your neigbor that his kid is ugly. But there are many times and places where that is not appropriate. You can equally call that good manners or shying away from the truth.

In this case, by not ranting on vociferously about something where his position is already clear, he is saving his political capital in the Muslim world for other issues where he can make a difference.

Sorry, Holy Father, but this is not a small group and it does have roots in the Muslim faith. I
 
The Pope doesn´t speak now in ex-cathedra and I am disagree with HIM.

I’d rather not think again if it means thinking the way you suggest.

This article is fine but I was talking about terrorism in the name of Allah against Christians and Jews in free countries. The article is talking about a much wider scope of warfare.

  1. Mentions the Koran does not prohibit suicide.
  2. Mentions that no other religons practice this.
  3. Provides no real data behind this blanket 34% statistic
  4. Promotes the false assertion that poverty leads to terrorism and suicide bombings, easily refutable by analyzing poverty in history or modern times.
  5. Almost certainly considers Palestinian suicide bombing of Israel’s as politically motivated rather than Islam motivated but we know that it is rich religous leaders such as Osama and others that create the sucide bombing machine. Yes, we know that some of their victims are poor but that is because the rich want to live and want the poor to do their dirty work in the name of Allah.
Many Islamic scholars will say the Koran does not justify what rich people such as Osama promote. Just as many will say the Koran does justify these actions.

I stand with what Holy Father says. What did I suggest. Excuse me, but the article did say that it wasn’t just moslem terrorists groups who do this, other religions do this too you know. They exist! That’s what the Holy Father was trying to say. Look in between the lines. Gee, I think I overlooked it, yeah right! I will not back down from what I said.
 
Well, I think the Holy Father called it correctly. Terrorism is irrational. It is not a rational decision to attack women & children, It is not a rational decision to blow yourself up. Terrorism is not based on reason, therefor it is irrational. 😃
 
That article which says only 34.6% of terrorist acts are Islamic inspired has 1981 as it’s starting point. Let’s move it up to the 1st WTC bombin in 1993 and see how the statistics change.

  1. Blowing up one’s self is NOT in itself “terrorism” as commonly acknowledged. So tying its Irrational nature to terrorism is a straw man argument. Period.
  2. Proof positive that terrorism IS rational: The terrorism in Spain had as its main objectives:
    A. Get Spain to adandon Irag —ACCOMPLISHED.
    B. Effect the election toward a more passive government toward Muslim aggression.–ACCOMPLISHED.
    Terrorism HAS RATIONAL ROOTS.
    Terrorism is included in Machiavellianism which is completely rationalist albiet an evil manifestation of it.
    To say that terrorism is irrational is to falsify its real nature which is OBJECTIVELY evil based on a false religion as well as false philosophy.
    B-XVI was simply obfuscating for public consumption.
    In newchurch, evil becomes more and more dimmed taking Truth with it into the black hole of humanism.

Well at least in the Baptist’s case, they let Salome dance — I doubt that she would be allowed to do her “Seven Veils” routine today in their society. :rolleyes:

Actually, the article said this:

“Gambetta further observes that, while no religion apart from Islam is directly involved in suicide missions”

And where did the Holy Father say other religions are engaged in suicide missions specifically against Christians and Jews?

You can stand by whatever you want but if you stand for a house of cards then the bricks they are holding up will fall on top of you.

Dear friend, you are not standing, but swinging in the wind…slowly turning, turning.
Now if “they exist” then we should give them an identity, and remove their veil of seclusion. You may proceed.
However, what is the excuse you use for B-XVI? Why it’s “others do it too”!. How sad.
What kind of Faith is it that must excuse every word from the Vatican as if it was from on-high?
When someone ANYONE speaks public drivel as if it was true, Truth Himself demands that it be confronted.
 
Uhh…color me naive, but shouldn’t we examine the Holy Father’s complete record of statements on terrorism before we jump on him for a single sound-byte?
