The pope has bestowed a great honor and confidence upon the leader of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, elevating Archbishop Edwin Frederick O’Brien to cardinal.

I am from Toronto Canada just heard that my Arch Bishop[BIBLEDRB][SIGN][/SIGN][/BIBLEDRB] Thomas Collins will be elevated to a Cardinal in February I am so happy for him

Cardinal O’Brien, however, is the Archbishop Apostolic Administrator of Baltimore until a replacement is named. He has been appointed Grand Master of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, and will serve in Rome.

For those who don’t know, Baltimore (my hometown) is the Premier See of the The United States. It was founded in 1789, John Carroll being the first Archbishop. The Archbishop of Baltimore has ‘priority of place’ in the American Church.

Carroll has the distinction of being the only American bishop to be elected by his peers, although later this selection was ratified by the Vatican. He was also the founder of Georgetown University, and an early proponent the Mass in the vernacular.

FYI, there is a post with the full list of Cardinal designees posted about an hour ago.

How cool for Archbishops Dolan and O’Brien in NYC and Baltimore, as well as Archbishop Collins in Toronto! Congratulations to them, and to all the new ‘Red Hats’!

And thank YOU, Holy Papa Benedict, for appointing them! VIVA IL PAPA! 👍

I suppose that if Puerto Rico ever became a state, Balitmore would lose that distinction. The Archdiocese of San Juan was established in 1511. 😉

There are diocese older than Baltimore, for instance New Orleans, but they were not part of the U S at the time of independence. Baltimore was the first diocese established in the United States.

The Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is not the oldest cathedral in the United States, but it was the first cathedral built in the United States. At one time, the Archdiocese of Baltimore included the entire U S. Boston, NY, Philadelphia, etc. were all established as suffergan diocese, and later elevated. The Baltimore Catechism is so-named because it was adopted by the Council of Baltimore, the largest assemblage of Catholic bishops outside of Rome since the Council of Trent.

On FB this morning, someone asked why O’Brien was appointed a Cardinal, and not an Oriole, or a Raven.

Cute.

Archbishop Dolan is originally from St. Louis so it is incredibly appropriate that he is appointed a Cardinal 🙂

Yeah, and there’s a quote from Archbishop Dolan in which he said, ‘When I was younger, the only Cardinal I wanted to be was Stan Musial.’ 😃

And it’s another funny one regarding Archbishop O’Brien being in Baltimore, with their sports’ teams having ‘bird names’! Cute, indeed! 👍

And O’Brien is from New York. Go figure.

Both are wonderful men. Godspeed to both of them.
