The Italian peninsula and nearby islands are home to 13 volcanoes which have erupted during recorded history, three of which have erupted in the last 100 years. Consequently, minor earthquakes in Italy are about as un-newsworthy as minor earthquakes in southern California.

A bigger question is why Italy doesn’t have more earthquakes. Do you suppose that God is deliberately suppressing Italian volcanic activity precisely because the headquarters of His Holy Church is located there?

In respect of the lightning story and St Peter’s, Rome frequently gets lightning strikes and the dome was fitted with lightning rods years ago.
